U.S. acts to open borders to foreigners with HIV

After more than two decades on the books, a little-known yet strictly enforced federal law barring foreigners with HIV or AIDS from entering the country is on its way out.

Tucked in a bill pledging $48 billion to combat the disease, signed into law by President Bush last week, was language stripping the provision from federal immigration law.

But that change didn't fully lift the entry ban on visitors with HIV or AIDS, which applies whether they're on tourist jaunts or seeking longer stays. The secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services still needs to delete HIV from the agency's list of ?communicable diseases of public health significance,? which includes tuberculosis, gonorrhea and leprosy.

An HHS spokeswoman declined to comment, noting administrators are still reviewing the new law. An April report from the Congressional Budget Office said that, based on information from HHS' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HIV will be dropped from the list and new regulations will be in place in two years.

What is the US government thinking?
Hey come to America , get medical treatment on our taxpayers tab, spread your disease to as many of our citizens as you like because we put foreigners best interest ahead of our own peoples welfare here.

It is not like we don?t already have a plethora of people leeching off our medical system as it is we don?t need to deliberately start importing more. Most AIDs/HIV carriers contract the disease because they were stupid enough not to take any precautions. Do we really want to take a chance morons like these won?t make the same mistake twice?

Unless it goes airborne I don't care. AIDS patients deserve dignity too. I just don't want our taxes footing the bill.

What sort of viruses/diseases are we allowing in and at what rate? It strikes me that we should only allow healthy people into the nation. Of course, that is obviously a contention that is seemingly unpopular if Congress?s vote and the President?s pen are any indication.

What about millions of uneducated and unskilled workers? Guess once the standards are lost, they really ARE lost. This does not have a good long term effect when you account for the sum of all these people instead of looking at each individual.

They are people too.

Each person is also a new source of infection. Does the disease no longer spread to new individuals, have there been no new cases in this nation, are we immune to the harm it causes? No, we are very much vulnerable to AIDs and we are being irresponsible with the lives of our countrymen.

So what happened to the right of Americans to be protected within their own nation? Apparently we have no rights, why have a border at all?

So who's worse a legal HIVer or an illegal? :)

I had to get a test for the AIDS when I immigrated here. I presume I don't have the HIV because they never mentioned it.

Generations ago when my ancestors were lined up at Ellis island they had to have a medical exam, why shouldn't these people have to prove they're healthy?

Like we don't have enough disease to worry about with our own citizens, and illegal crimmigrants from everywhere bringing TB among other things :55:

I guess for a bit of balance there's this:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26146419/

As nations treat gays better, asylum is elusive

Shift in U.S. policy a blow to Latin American AIDS patients, activists say

SAN DIEGO - Quietly over the past 14 years, gay men and lesbians from Mexico have sought -- and received -- political asylum in the United States based on their sexual orientation and the argument that the culture of "machismo" in their country has sometimes put homosexuals there in danger.

But as Mexico and other Latin American countries begin to liberalize laws regarding homosexuality, hold gay pride events and expand treatment for people with AIDS, it is becoming increasingly difficult to win such cases, say asylum applicants, U.S. lawyers and Latino activists.

I think a much more pressing issue is to resolve the reports that Socio and Butterbean are viruses. If proven true, they should be deported. The problem is who would have them? - maybe some of the religious whack states that thrive on fud.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

First thing that came to mind for me.

I still think it's a bad idea though ;)

I don't care what people do, but I care about having to foot the bill for what people do. Bringing in people that are 1) a risk to others in the society and 2) require significant and expensive medical care is a stupid idea.

Butterbean, you're slipping. I thought your biggoted reply would immediately follow Socio's Yet Another "Undesireables" Thread post.

How many potential immigrants are denied every year on average due to testing positive for HIV or AIDS? Out of those people, how many of them choose to remain outside of our borders after being denied?

"Many illegals who cross our borders have tuberculosis. That disease
had largely disappeared from America, thanks to excellent hygiene
and powerful modern drugs such as isoniazid and rifampin.
TB's swift, deadly return now is lethal for about 60 percent of those
infected because of new Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDRTB).
Until recently MDR-TB was endemic to Mexico. This
Mycobacterium tuberculosis is resistant to at least two major
antitubercular drugs. OrdinaryTB usually is cured in six months with
four drugs that cost about $2,000. MDR-TB takes 24 months with
many expensive drugs that cost around $250,000,with toxic side
effects. Each illegal with MDR-TB coughs and infects 10 to 30
people, who will not show symptoms immediately. Latent disease
explodes later"

Damn. That's scary stuff.

I've got a 12 year old in public school and our illegal population has exploded here.

Why isn't this is the MSM?

Never mind, I already know. :disgust:
