The US has rejected comments by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, in which he questioned whether the US might be responsible for cancers affecting Latin American leaders.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland called the comments "horrific and reprehensible".

She said they were not worthy of further response.

On Wednesday Mr Chavez said it was "very strange" that he and other leftist leaders had all had cancer.

But he said he was thinking out loud and not making "rash accusations".

Mr Chavez - who had cancer treatment in Cuba this year - was speaking a day after it was announced that Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner also had the disease.

Fernando Lugo of Paraguay, Dilma Rousseff of Brazil and her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have also had cancer.

Mr Chavez said the instances of cancer among Latin American leaders were "difficult to explain using the law of probabilities".

"Would it be strange if they had developed the technology to induce cancer and nobody knew about it?" Mr Chavez asked in a televised speech to soldiers at an army base.

Recovery

The Venezuelan leader, 57, says he is now free of cancer after having surgery and chemotherapy in Cuba earlier this year.

The exact details of his illness have not been made public, fuelling speculation that his condition may be worse than he has let on.

Argentina's Cristina Fernandez, 58, is due to have surgery for thyroid cancer on 4 January. Doctors say her prognosis is very good.

Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff, 64, is fully recovered after having treatment for lymphoma in 2009.

Her predecessor, Lula da Silva, 66, is currently having treatment for throat cancer. Doctors say he is responding well and should make a full recovery.

Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo, 60, was diagnosed with lymphoma in August 2010 but is now in remission after chemotherapy.

Why does Chavez get so much attention (besides oil) in mainstream US news I do not know.

You would think you guys would be all bent out of shape about some of the dictators the US supports.

Stalinism is a long dead concept, (Castro and Raul and Chavez mostly suck bad) but the fact Castro still wakes up and laughs his ass off at you righties still carrying on your ideological small pen0r complex does make this little red heart swell with glee.

Chavez grows more delusional by the day. But delusional or not, what he has done to that country... taking it from a promising democracy to an inflation-wracked poverty increasing socialist shithole is nothing short of disgusting and sad. He can't die fast enough.

Chavez sucks a mountain of ass and all but given the evidence I don't see how the U.S. government couldn't have given those people lymphoma. They probably already tried to overthrow his ass. How the hell is it in my interest as to who the dictator of venezuela is?

The U.S. government needs to be stripped of all its technology before it gets the power to turn people into robots at the flick of a button/switch/whatever. Hell, they're probably already working on giving American citizens cancer.

the U.S. government (and the U.N.) consists of some sick people and the sooner we get rid of it, the safer we'll be.

1. I don't take Chavez seriously.
2. If you were willing to, and patient enough, I don't think it would be that difficult to see that your target was unknowingly exposed to enough carcinogens that the likelihood of developing cancer was greatly increased. Put some sort of agent on the steering wheel that was absorbed through the skin, etc. - Find something that wasn't protected that you knew your target would get more exposure to than anyone else, and plant your carcinogen there. Seems plausible.

Chavez is a lot like his right wing detractors- much of what he says wasn't intended to be factual statements, but rather to provoke an emotional response in his audience. It's all about what they want to believe.

If we are splitting hairs like that I would put 1917 - 21 when Trotsky lost power and Lenin became an invalid as the first, after this the "Workers Revolution" was wholly crushed and Stalin came into power.

Trotsky was kind of a dick I am not really a fan of but it was not fully totalitarian until Stalin got him and other more moderate Socialists out of the picture.

De-Stalinization of the USSR was a good thing, a damn shame it was done so half-assed though. The 1980s were far too late to win back the trust of the worker whose spirit had been crushed under a hopeless bureaucratic mess that whole generations had come to distrust by default.

The Big K banging his shoe at the UN and the whole Capitalist running dog meme was pretty funny though, the Cuban missile crisis, not so much. (it takes 2 to do the imperialist tango in all fairness)

A damn shame so many Americans have no clue that late 60-70s Iron Curtain was nowhere near as bad as post WW2 era Americans think the SU was the whole time. It gives a really lopsided view of history here where we think our shit does not stink.
