As a second amendment supporter I am fine with universal checks all across the USA.

I dont like felons or mentally unstable folks getting firearms. Some folks might still slip thru the system, but it could help a lot.

Many of those college shooters have had known mental issues but still somehow purchased weapons. Same with the man who shot up that ladies gymn.

"This is a no-brainer, this is the simplest thing in the world," Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said. "It troubles me all the time."

so a Chicago cop is wanting more gun control? yea ok...

Is it just that I'm in NY that it's required to have a background check at gun shows as well? And for the transfer of guns between private parties?

TX doesn't require it for private sales.

As for universal background check, I don't see a problem. I've submitted to one for every gun purchase I've made.

It's not hard to find an FFL, FFS... :D

Unless the ATF plans to vigorously enforce the law with expensive sting operations, "universal background checks" are just security theater. Private sales will continue to occur in gas station parking lots simply because dealer facilitation is a time sink, and the risk of arrest miniscule.

Instead of requiring all sales to be facilitated by dealers, a sensible alternative would be to allow private buyers/sellers to access NICS (or some modified version of it to avoid privacy issues). The burden of a 30 second background check phone call is so low that few people would object, and I suspect that compliance rates would be very high.

So jack booted commie thugs are calling for intrusive rules to make it harder for god fearing Americans to protect themselves from criminals with badges.

We don't need no stinking badges.

Well said. Gun control <> taking guns away.

Why not? They'll do it for small baggies of drugs.

Yeah, not going to deal with the popups to finish the article...

As a gun owner I have no problem with background checks for all sales and would also not be opposed to registration, but I do understand how some would object to registration as a first step to taking them away. Sad that that's the case, but there are so many on the left that want to ban all guns that given the power they'd use the registrations to go after people.

I own a car and have to register it so in principle registration would be little different and would make it possible to track the sale of guns that wind up being used in crimes. There could be a lot of benefit to it, but it won't happen because the NRA and many gun owners will not have it. And, they will not have it because the gun grabbers would threaten gun owners with registration.

So, because the left can't help themselves in demanding guns be banned the right will continue to fight and win on this. Sad...

I'm all for this as long as everyone with a badge gets a background check including a mental health evaluation.

some FFL's rip you off, at least in CA. i'd be much more supportive if NICS were opened to the public.

Did you click the X in the circle to the right of the box to close it, you bastard. Now that I wasted my time because nobody else would help you, I no longer have any interest in expressing my very important and extremely cogent opinion.

I frequently take the side of the police, but I do not think they are all infallible. They are just like every other person. I am also not one of the morons in here that always thinks the police are wrong.

I am all for background checks for gun purchases within reason. I think most people agree with this.

I should point out, I do NOT want local police to be involved in the process in any manner. I suspect they would mess with the system to their advantage.

Also, I if you pass a check I dont want any restrictions on the amount or type of firearms you can get. And I'd like to ease up on the suppressors too.

I don't see it.

lol, I read your post, clicked the link again, confirmed that I didn't see an X, went back to reply to you, went back to close the tab, and suddenly the X appeared. I guess it was timed and I was too impatient the first time. Thanks.

I'd agree with those above who suggest if anything we need more review and healthchecks on police officers as clearly they aren't properly trained or have some mental health issues to deal with.
