Fox News:

SURMAD, Afghanistan ? A U.S. Chinook troop transport helicopter was shot down by enemy fire Monday afternoon in eastern Afghanistan, incurring multiple fatalities, Pentagon sources said.

The helicopter was moving troops during the largest battle of the Afghan war, as 1,500 American, Afghan and allied Western troops continued their assault upon several hundred heavily armed Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters holed up in the caves of Paktia province.

One American and three Afghans were killed Saturday as the attack began.

U.S. Military Helicopter Shot Down in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (March 4) - An American helicopter was shot down over eastern Afghanistan, Pentagon sources said Monday, raising casualties in the largest ground operation of the 5-month-old war.

The Army helicopter was taking part in an assault on suspected al-Qaida and Taliban fighters the Pentagon says were regrouping south of Gardez.

It would be the first American aircraft taken down by enemy fire in the war, following accidental crashes of other craft since the anti-terror campaign opened in October.

Defense officials declined to give details, indicating they were unsure whether a search-and-rescue mission for the troops had been completed.

I'm starting to get a very bad feeling about this. I think they fooled us into thinking we easily crushed al Qaeda -- but most of them got away like cockroaches scattering away when the lights turn on.

<< I think they fooled us into thinking we easily crushed al Qaeda >>

The Bush administration has always said the opposite.

All I can say is; is what we are doing worth it in the long run? I don't want us to end up like Russia in the 80's when they tried this shiznit.

True.

One advantage: We're not planning to stay in the area.

One thing I dont understand is if they are regrouping in Pakestan why dont we get some Daisy Cutters out there? Its not like Musharaf is an enemy.

I think it is worth it. We couldn't allow al Qaeda to just get stronger in Afghanistan. From what I read, bin Ladin became emboldened by how we never really retaliated from his other attacks (Africa Embassy bombings, Cole etc) -- he thought we were weak and didn't have any stomach (Somolia) -- once it got tough, he thought Americans will always run.

Then he will just get bolder and bolder. By "defeating" the Soviet Union and the US, he will be more convinced that Allah is on his side and he will just step up his Islamic extremists activities.

So, by doing nothing, we will just get more attacks in the future.

Unfortunately, a lot of people in the Muslim world are incensed over what we're doing in Afghanistan so we're gonna get more attacks no matter what we do.

Musharaf speaks for about 60% of the people of Pakistan, the only problem is the other 40% are brain washed taliban supporters who would think nothing of putting a bullet in the head of an American...or slitting their throat...

If Musharaf let the US military operate freely in his country the militant Muslims would assassinate him and his whole staff within a week.

Can't argue with that logic.

I guess the only way would be to just go in there and let Musharaf officially "protest" after we blew them away.
