WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence told the most diverse graduating class in the history of the U.S. Military Academy on Saturday that the world is "a dangerous place" and they should expect to see combat.

"Some of you will join the fight against radical Islamic terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq," he said.

Pence congratulated the West Point graduates on behalf of President Donald Trump, and told them, "As you accept the mantle of leadership I promise you, your commander in chief will always have your back. President Donald Trump is the best friend the men and women of our armed forces will ever have."

More than 980 cadets became U.S. Army second lieutenants in the ceremony at West Point's football stadium.

Pence noted that Trump has proposed a $750 billion defense budget for 2020 and said the United States "is once again embracing our role as the leader of the free world."

"It is a virtual certainty that you will fight on a battlefield for America at some point in your life," Pence said. "You will lead soldiers in combat. It will happen. Some of you may even be called upon to serve in this hemisphere."

In my neck of the woods, you are not military material if you cant deploy for international operations, comes with the job description.

Just so you understand my feelings -- I retired after 40+ yrs working for our government in various national security agencies! I was good as what I do! I know a lot about whats going on and I can tell you that those who are in charge will tell you that Trump scares the shit out of them! He is a true maverick and marches to the beat of his own whims!!

I have a few good friends with the long tab, and a few with the short tab and scroll (and they made it clear the difference on those two) All of them are extremely nice, soft spoken folks, who have seen actual combat, some multiple times. They all valued what combat taught them, but didn't exactly relish the experience.

One of the folks I trained with went over the weird criteria for CIB vs CMB a few years ago as he was SF Medical Sgt. Early on he would have only been eligible for CMB, but that was changed to consider him eligible for CIB for later deployment (sometime in GWOT era).

I picked their brains hard (and a number of other folks I work from every branch, and virtually every career field.) I've sat on interview panels before and want to understand what I was looking at as best as I could. We give veterans preference and have several military installations nearby, so we get lots of prior service folks.

There's only two places that we've even tried to make such a case for in the past what 3 decades, both at the behest of conservatives with little to no real reason to support it (Mexico and Venezuela) and both being ones that Turmp has been deliberately ratcheting up such talk against. And considering some of the previous ones were literally outright treasonous (Iran-Contra), if this type of talk doesn't concern you, well we know why, but it doesn't make it any less stupid.

It of course also ignores that people aren't discussing it being true but if it should or shouldn't be true. Not that I'm surprised that you can only see things in the absolute simplest most dumbed down manner, but its like you constantly are trying to argue things in the absolute most idiotic manner possible.
