We've all seen the scams in the newspaper ads where you have to pay $14.95 for a listing of U.S. Government job listings.

Here's the official website where you can browse jobs including salaries for FREE :)

With government budgets what they are, I figured you meant the salaries for the positions were free.

Depends what kind of job you get. I'm doing just fine financially and the benefits are great. I also have excellent job security. :D

I tried to use that site when looking for a new gov't job after leaving my old one. It sucked, like most fed websites. :/

I saw some administrative jobs for the US Navy in San Diego.

However I'm sure that the middle working class decent neighborhoods aren't cheap.

Yup. Gotta love the random ones like "President's Day". We call those "golf holidays" since it's a great chance to hit the links on a weekday when no one's around. :D

My agency just finished hiring 80 new hires. I guess the government is the only sector that isn't laying people off right now

I'm sure I could get someone in the Hep branch here to help you out with that. I also have some multi-drug resistant strains of gonorrhoea I'm currently working with that I could throw in for free. :Q :D

State jobs aren't that bad. I've been a Civil Engr with the state (LA) for almost a year now. I make a little less than I'd like, but I work the hours I want and have already accrued a lot of annual and sick leave. On top of that, I have plenty of free time at work. When I start grad school at LSU and start studying for the PE, I will be able to do a lot of my work here ;)

the facilities tend to vary a lot from agency to agency and even branch to branch.

What are the other differences between federal and state jobs?

True, I just wanted to give everyone a heads-up so they didn't land a job only to find out it's total crap. ;)
