No details yet.

Update: CNN knows about as much as I do. Called a friend who couldn't talk and was busy because this crap just went down.

ATHENS - An explosion ripped through the U.S. embassy compound in central Athens on Friday, a police source said.

It was not clear what caused the blast and there was no immediate word on whether there were any casualties.

Police cordoned off all roads around the embassy.

Police officials at the scene said that whatever caused the explosion damaged the official embassy sign outside the mission, but there was little other indication of the extent of damage inside.

This developing story will be updated as details become available.

Crap, here I am about to post an atotblog about my horrible day and then this happens. Puts things in perspective.

I hope the casualties are minimal 🙁

Well, the Greeks have not had much love for the U.S. the last couple of decades. Still. I'm going to go out on a limb and say it was someone from outside Greece that was behind this.

I've been to Greece numerous times and the only way to bomb the embassy would be an inside job. The place is surrounded by huge gates and security all around.

"The senior police official did not say whether the explosion was set off inside the compound or whether something might have been thrown into the embassy grounds.

The tightly guarded building is surrounded by a 3-meter (9-feet)-high steel fence. Guards are posted at every entrance and at street corners around it."

stock market crash?!?!?! oh well i took in some gains today. gains i wanted for 2006 but held off due to tax reasons.
i hope its nothing major

If it was an explosion inside the building on the third floor as the Reuters article suggested it could be a mortar round lobbed in from somewhere. If I remember correctly its only three or four floors with a park close by.

I like the wording they used: "An explosion ripped through the U.S. embassy compound in central Athens on Friday"

Ripped through? It sounds like now they don't even know whether the bomb damaged anything or was set of inside or outside of the compound... what a crock.
