The U.S. Navy said its guided missile destroyer collided with a Japanese-owned oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz early Sunday morning.

No one was injured in the collision that occurred about 1 a.m. local time when the USS Porter collided with the Panamanian-flagged bulk oil tanker M/V Otowasan, the Navy said in a statement.

The Navy did not provide details about the collision, saying only the accident was not related to combat. It said the incident is under investigation.

Damage to the USS Porter was being evaluated, "but the ship is able to operate under its own power," the statement said.

The Navy did not say what, if any, damage the Otowasan incurred in the collision.

The USS Porter, in the Persian Gulf on a scheduled deployment, is assigned to the U.S. 5th Fleet. It is conducting maritime security operations, the Navy said.

reminded me old joke:
US Ship: Please divert your course 0.5 degrees to the south to avoid a
collision.
CND reply: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.
US Ship: This is the Captain of a US Navy Ship. I say again, divert your course.
CND reply: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course!
US Ship: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS CORAL SEA*, WE ARE A LARGE WARSHIP OF THE US NAVY. DIVERT YOUR COURSE NOW!!
CND reply: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

LOL Yeah, I thought of that joke as well. Glad no real damage was done to either ship (if the tanker was punctured, we would know about it).

Have you've seen the pics?

That Destroyer will not see service for many years.

I saw the damage in the vid.

Gotta wonder how a US destroyer which is like Porsche in terms of acceleration and speed and puts out enough electromagnetic energy for sensors to microwave a pizza a 100 miles away gets hit by an oil tanker. The destroyer must have been anchored or something.

This damage can be repaired in less than a year. Mostly hull damage and the hull is made of aluminum.

Now that I know noone got hurt, I wonder what yard is going to get the contract for the repairs. Jobs jobs jobs!

Feeling sorry for the commanders of each ship. They're probably going to lose their jobs over this.

Oil tanker collision?

I'm surprised Dave didn't immediately jump to "Big Oil Drive for Five"...

I'm glad nobody was hurt. I am perplexed, however, at how such an accident can happen to one of our warships. Since the other ship was an oil tanker, it seems rather unlikely it did anything abruptly. (Really officer, that tree jumped in front of me!) Given all of the military's advanced technology, is there any possible explanation aside from human negligence?

Lol, I am with you. How the hell can it hit a target 100 miles away with a friggen missile (or however far away) but can't avoid a slow ass oil tanker is beyond me. I guess if the oil tankers pilot fell asleep or something while they were passing but otherwise WTF.

I suspect one or both of the ships speed dropped to the point they lost the ability to steer the ship and they collided. Depending on where the collision occurred there are extremely narrow ship channels in the Straits of Hormuz. Not sure about the weather conditions but wind could have been a factor as well.

I think it was to try to get into a full scale invasion. Obama really wants to get reelected, so he is going to do whatever it takes... Which means he will have to find a way into another war.

Idiots. If that tanker was hostile, the captain of the warship would've been demoted to lifeguard.

It took them 14 months to repair the USS Cole, but the damage to the Cole was FAR more extensive.

If the navy ship can not protect itself from something the size of a ship, how is it going to stop a missile?
