I will be a sophomore, planning to major in Computer Engineering, and have been accepted to both the University of Minnesota and University of Wisconsin-Madison for transfer for the Spring 2001 Semester (starts January).

I'm really having a hard time making this decision which could affect my life greatly.. though it might ultimately come down to which one has available housing for transfer students.

I live in the Twin Cities now, so my family would be here, but I was born in Wisconsin and have always preferred the Badgers over the Gophers.. plus UW-Madison is generally considered the better school, correct? Sigh, lots of things to consider, though I think I like Minnesota's CE program better as it appears less EE-intensive than Madison's.

Any thoughts?

One thing to consider, as a Minnesotan would you pay in-state or out-of-state tuition in Wisconsin?

And not that it means much to you, but a good friend of mine graduated with a CS degree from UofM Mpls a couple of years ago and is currently pulling down about $60K/year as a programmer. So a degree from that school must mean something. :p

Uof M is better from what I hear but there is sometimes a housing problem so you might want to check that out.plus there is more stuff to do in mpls then madison from what people keep telling me from there.

Madison is in the top 5 and Minnesota does not even rate do not listen to the prepubecent Paulson :)

oh, don't worry, i quietly ignored paulson's comments (i believe he is from minnesota, and plus he's not of college age)..

boberfett, there is a sister-state thing that allows me to not have to pay out of state tuition in Wisconsin schools.

spicolliwell.. people also say madison is one of the best cities to live in in the world.. and i live in the twin city metro area so i know what's here..

heh, i sound like I'm defending Madison... i think it's time for me to make a pro/con list.

I am from the Twin Cities originally and attended Madison. I do not know about your specific program but UW is generally considered the superior undergrad school (e.g., this year, US News ranked it as the #8 public school in America; U of M was 18th).

IMO Madison is a much tighter, more fun college community than the U of M. There are a lot of commuter students at Minnesota, whereas Madison is a geographically-united, close-knit college community. Madison is an incredibly fun town and close to Chicago and Milwaukee, and not far from Mpls-St Paul either. I LOVED it and I think most Badgers would agree.

tee_edwards,

thanks for the comments.. I think deep down inside I want to go to UW-Madison.. but my sister from atlanta is moving to the twin cities and is having a baby very soon now. obviously i'd like to be close to them and my nephew... though I think the drive from the twin cities to Madison is only about 4 hours? i dunno about this.. decisions decisions

Yeah, this is about a 4-hour trip - an easy weekend away. Your sis and her clan would probably enjoy visiting Madison as well.
