Rant U.O. Will Ferrell is just awful

i tried to stomach the standup he did yesterday on Colbert - thinking "there's got to be a new Anchorman in the works" - but really couldn't go more than a couple minutes. My Unpopular Opinion is that Ferrell had a couple decent roles where he did a bit better and at the same time he had a character that suited him, but otherwise he's incredibly unfunny AND, on top of that, he thinks he's hilarious, adding even more misery to the result.

Same. His movies are overall dumb and childish.

I consider his standup and comedy style to be a lot like Brian Regan. It's... very.... "family friendly" is a positive/good way of putting it. But overall I just don't find it funny.

I thought he was fine in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back and Stranger Than Fiction... other than that, he hasn't been much my cup of tea. Did like him as Alex Trebek. Haven't seen all of Anchorman, didn't particularly enjoy Old School or Election.
I guess he did okay in Elf, but I think that character is supposed to be annoying?

When you write your character around him, he's .. well, i guess "reliable". Mugatu from Zoolander was ok, although he's got something like 5 minutes of screen time.

Great actors rarely come out of SNL. That's not a slam against SNL or the talent they have as comedians or sketch comedy... It's just a different kind of acting when your screen time is short enough that you have to reveal all about your character in seconds rather than minutes. If you look at most of the comedians turned actors, they basically establish a few characters and shove them into different roles. Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Mike Myers, Will Farrell....they all basically mimic the same over the top characters they were known for playing on SNL. It's actually neat going back and watching SNL reruns to see where they adapted movie roles from.

One of my favorites was how Mike Myers was basically doing a Lorne Michaels impersonation to create Dr. Evil. Lorne was in an interview and he kept saying, "Riiiggght"... You didn't notice until they played the 10 times he said it back and then you realize how MM was just making fun of his boss in Austin Powers.

Me too. He has always made me laugh, and I've enjoyed just about anything he's been in (well maybe not Bewitched so much ).

Overall, i like ferrel. I certainly liked his anchorman style character when I was much younger. His SNL days are great.

Oh, I like Seinfeld, and curb your enthusiasm also, big time

I really didn't like Seinfeld when it was on prime-time TV way back when, but watched anyway because it was my (now ex) wife's favorite show.

Have to admit however that I've since watched most episodes sans-wife and found it to be extremely funny.
