U know wha.. MS should come out with a Gamer's Version of XP Windows....

XP is "supposed" to be a cross between win98 for home/gaming compatibility and win2k for office/stability. I hope they get it right.

But just look at them... XP looks like a very MEMORY HUNGERY/Thirst OS... Suck up all of you memory, just like BILL suck up all of your money out of your pocket.

I don't think 9x is memory hungry at all. I have 224 MB, and I never have any problems with lack of memory. Not even in 2K. So I don't think it will be that bad, and besides, RAM is dirt cheap right now.

actually, in a thread about whistler i read MS is going to have windows be completely skinnable, kinda like the way windows media player is.

<< it wold be cool if you could turn off all the msn lookinng features to something more basic... >>

You can....from what I've been told you can make WinXP look as basic as you want. You can turn off all the skinning, from what I've been told you can even turn of the gradient title bars, and make it look like Win95..

yeah they won't do a "gamer's version" simply because it'll keep us from buying Xbox.

you mean like Win2k? I totally agree, I don't want to have to upgrade my computer to run an OS that looks almost the exact same as the one I'm running (9x)..

I'm very much against all the bloat that MS is putting into their OS's (very much apparent in windows ME, and 2000 esp, being so memory hungry).

I'd like to see someone come out with a win2000lite version, like what we already have with windows 98..

Soccerman,

On the other hand what else could they do with that CPU and memory? Their OS and software innovation has stagnated and when you can't rebuild you repaint.

I want my OS to run apps and help me find my files. I couldn't care less if there are yellow ducky icons all over hell provided they don't "quack" and annoy me. But if XP requires this yearly subscription nonsense and a large memory footprint, nulifying my recent purchase of another 128 MB, I will be irate.

well sure there probably are useful things that they could build into an OS that would use CPU cycles..

however, I don't want an all in one piece of software, I want to be able to dictate what CPU cycles (and what RAM) go to what program, rather then just sit there and let windows eat it all up on something I will never notice (except if I have a fatal crash, requiring a rollback, however I'd rather just reformat after that).

I like clean installations, with next to nothing running in my taskmanager. It's amazing how my CPU time that all virus scan software uses..

Every attempt for a skinnable something always results in bloatedness. WMP7 is hideous. So is Netscape 6.0. Winamp ain't too bad, but i'd bet it'd be a lot better if it wazn't skinable.

Most of the time, I don't use the skinning feature. The only skin I'm currently using is the "classic" skin in WMP7.0, because I like the simpler interface of WMP6.0; I don't know if that really counts. Otherwise, I just stick with the default skin because the default one is usually more functional than the flashy aftermarket skins.
