I am trying to fix a computer for a local small business and running into a massive problem. It boots so slow that I know there's something really wrong with it. By slow, I mean like about 45 minutes! It takes about 15 minutes from the splash screen to the login for XP Pro and at least another 1/2 hour after that to get to a desktop.

I thought that it was spyware congested and took the drive out, scanned it and found baigle (sp?) and some macro infested word docs, but no spyware/adware (using AVG and Spybot).
Tried again and it's still junk. I have even tried swapping in a new HDD and re-installing Winblows, but get this....it's that slow even during the install process! It takes a few seconds to respond after I press F8 to "agree" during the XP install. It stayed on the "Installing Windows" screen overnight last night, so I know that something is really wrong. BTW, no-it didn't freeze up.

The machine is any eMachines with a 2.2 Celeron and 256 MB of ram. Model # is D2244 if you want more info.

UPDATE: Tnx, SWX. It came with XP installed by the oem, so I would expect it to have no problem w/XP as you said. That's the weird thing. I just installed Win2K with no problem at all. It went just like it should have.

If anybody knows why this would be, please lmk.

UPDATE2: Now that it has Win2K on it, I can get to a desktop, but I noticed it's still slow. Task Manager says that the "System" process is taking 90-100% of the CPU cycles. This is on a machine that has never been on the internet and with a fresh install of Win2k after removing partitions and reformatting, so I highly doubt spyware/virus in this case. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Maybe try to update your BIOS. The specs look like it should handle WinXP more than well enough.

If the hard drive happens to be a Western Digital ATA/100 model (regular flat 40-pin data cable) then do make sure it's jumpered for Single Master if it is the only drive on the data cable. Single Master is different from standard Master on a WD, and it is easy to set: just remove the jumper cap from the drive's pins and leave the jumper off.

A WD set for anything else can result in POST hangs, no POST, or weird slownesses, so that's what made me think of it here. Good luck, whatever it ends up being :)

I have a hunch that there's a hardware issue (USB maybe-port controller->no devices are connected) and that Windows is trying to debug what it feels is a bad driver. The other two weird things are: 1. Knoppix works fine-no problems at all. 2. The NIC light is always solid on, never flashes or anything. The nic works, but the lights are not working right.

Fixed it: The problem appears to be that the USB controller had gone to hell. The rig wouldn't boot with the USB disabled in BIOS (don't know why) but in the Device Manager I was able to disable all the USB ports and the problem is completely gone.

If this guy wants USB, he'll need a PCI card that's all. Thanks for the responses.
