Tyre pressure for a hybrid bicycle?

I'm getting a hybrid cycle wih 700C (26") tyres soon. I have a mini guage pump that gives the PSI of the pumped tyre, but it says it's not a very accurate one and only for a rough indication.

I believe a hybrid bike's tryes should be pumped between 60-90 PSI. Is that correct?

I can't buy a proper calibrated guage pump yet so after relying on the mini pump, how hard does 90 PSI feel? Will I be able to press in the tyre with my hand at all, or just a little?

Do hybrid's need special inner tubes? And doesn't pumping it so hard make it more vulnerable to thorn punctures?

My Ridgback Hybrid has these: Continental Sports Contact

I've never taken these over 60psi (even at 60 they felt too hard)

Well it depends entirely on the tire and what you are riding on. I ride my Trek on the road and crushed gravel bike paths. It's 110 PSI, and works fine. Other tires call for lower pressure. Usually they are for off road as well, but have higher rolling resistance.

Just look at the sidewall.

The tires will always say along the edge what they should be pumped up to. If your pump isn't very accurate, then get a seperate gauge to check the psi with.

Can I generalize that thinner tires normally require higher PSIs?

The bike seems to ride a lot faster on properly inflated tires :)
