Typing anysite.com and typing www.anysite.com any different?

Why is it that some sites refuse to load when you add just .com to them ? page not available is what I get at times...although this is rare ..why does it happen? and when it happens if I prefix www. it works again.....weird...can anyone give an explanation?

It has to do with the DNS entry. Sometime domain.com point to a different IP address as www.domain.com and sometime they are pointing to the same IP address (in most cases). That's why you get that "page not available" message, because you are probably trying to request a page from a non webserver machine.
