Typical Wireless Transfer Speeds

I usually upload files to my server at home via FTP using a wired connection. With that I upload at 9-10MBs. Now I understand that 100Mbps = 12.5 MBs so I am quite happy with my speeds. The wireless side of my Network is composed of an HP AP420 Enterprise Level AP. It is linked to the same switch as the Server's wired connection. I uploaded a file last night using the wireless from my laptop connected at 54Mbps. The transfer maxed out at 2.5MBs. Is this normal? I was thinking If I am getting 9-10MBs on a 100Mbps connection shouldn't I be getting 5-6MBs on a 54Mbps connection? What speeds are you guys getting?
