assuming the well-documented 20C offset is occuring on my MSI-K8N, my CG revision clawhammer a64 3000+ is idling in the low to mid 40s, and, at full load, is around 54C.

seem reasonable? i'm using a zalman AlCu7000 with some AS5. i may have overdone the glob of AS5.

it seems inconsistent to me - the heatsink is almost completely cool to the touch. i figured it'd be kinda warm with idle temps in the 40s.

Temps can be misleading for many computer users. As you stated.. motherboards are not accurate with the temp it displays. I'm using watercooling and get temps of 36C at idle. 40C at load.

It really depends on the room temp, case ventilation, and cooling method. If the system is completely stable I wouldn't worry about the temps too much. I would check for the amount of thermal compound on the heatsink... Use a razor to thin out the layer of AS5 over the cpu. You want it very thin.. but still there to fill in any bumps in the heatsink for good contact.

I use radio shack white goop because I couldn't wait a week to turn on my computer. :)

My system:
A64 3000
Aopen AK86-L

I use a big arse dual heatercore with twin 120 fans blowing through it and out the case. Maze 4 CPU and GPU blocks.

My idle temps are almost identical to yours, I thought it was high, but i've had no problems in 6 months (aside from last nights PSU failure). I used AS5 with a Thermaltake Silent Boost HSF. Sonata case with 2 120mm fans on an Asus board. Our temps (California) are consistantly warm so I was expecting higher case and cpu temps. Hope that helps.
