i wanted to know if the t40/t41 and x40 both use the same type of ram? i want to know if it is interchangeable. I plan on buying a t40 and an x40, one for myself and the other for a family member. I would order both w/ 256, and then i'd buy a stick of 512. This would make it so both laptops have 512 ram, is this feasable?

Yes, that would work. Both take PC2700 SODIMMS. IIRC the X40's ship with 256 (or 512) soldered on board and one free SODIMM slot, so you have to take the 256 out of the T41 and put it into the X40. You'll have to remove the T41's keyboard, but it's pretty easy, just 4 screws.

The T40 takes Pc2100 SODIMM's and the T41 uses PC2700. Stingygrrl, mine came with Samsung (IBM) brand ram. The 1gb stick is Samsung and my 512 is Samsung as well.
