Type of partitions to create for dual-boot systems?

I want to create a dual-boot configuration on my system using XP and Vista. I need to know what kind of partitions I need to create.

I heard somewhere that I need 2 primary partitions.

And I heard that I only need 1 primary partition and 1 extended partition.

Anyone able to shed some light on this?

Thanks.

When you load XP, you will see options for creating these partitions. The extended one is any extra partition other than C:.
I set up C: with 3.5 gig. for my XP Pro OS only. I had one time before set it up smaller, but found that it will get bigger, depending on how well you keep it cleaned, and waht you allow to be added to your desktop.
D: is the second drive for me,a nd I have all my programs loaded there. Here is how to make D: the default drive for loading your programs.
1. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
2. Find ProgramFilesDir whose default should be C:\Program Files
3. Change this to whatever directory you wish. I changed it to D:\Program Files for example.

Thanks for the info. But I need to know the type of partitions (Primary, extended, logical, dos, etc...) for a DUAL-BOOT system. In other words, 2 operating systems.
