Type of HD for a USB setup

So, I'm going to be getting a new HD, which I'm going to put into an external box and run through USB 2.0. This seems to be cheaper than buying a straight-up external HD. I'm not doing RAID things, as I pretty much don't know what the hell RAID is.
My question: for this setup, does the type of HD matter? SATA, UATA, IDE, etc? and are external enclosures designed specifically for one type or another?

thanks folks!
