Apparently there is a juror or two who don't seem to be willing to continue deliberation in good faith.

A second note to the judge just 20 minutes later, apparently from the juror singled out in the first note, read, in part: "They refuse to recognize the right to at least one juror to have a good faith belief that the prosecution has not proved its case that the defendants are guilty.

Jurors are typically NOT the brightest bulbs in the box and can be stubborn. I wouldnt go as far to say they were paid off or intimidated. Id say the person is just stupid/uneducated, and the defense team did a good job picking jurors. Most cases are won(aquittal or hung jury) or lost in jury selection.

The hold out juror is a 60+ year old grandma, retired teacher who got a law degree and passed the bar at 58, practiced law for two years then retired. She is unwilling to continue because she feels shes being persecuted by the other jurors. There have been shouting matches between jurors. The judge should call a mistrial.
