Tyan Tiger MP - What Processors?

Folks,

I just bought my first Tiger MP (and first new computer in many moons) so I need a little help on this. What processors can I use with the Tiger? Obviously Athlon MP processors are rated for dual setups so those will work. But what other options do I have?

I read somewhere about Athlon XP processors that work fine and others that need to have some connectors joined to make them work. I also read elsewhere in this forum someone talking about a dual Duron setup.

Any enlightenment will be appreciated 🙂

Thanks

I would buy just the plain old XP1800 and just make sure that the L5 bridges are intact so that it can run in SMP. I have tested a couple of those things and all the ones with the L5 bridges worked fine in smp. I would buy the OEM version and that way you can ask the vender to see the CPU so you can verify that the L5 bridges are intact. I do aggree with SKORPI0 about the athlon MP 1.2 gig being a great deal for now. But if you can hold out and just wait till the end of the month AMD will be doing a price drop on there CPUs. One thing about running the tiger MP Mobo you should get some good ram that is Reg. ECC and is verifyed to work with that board. Thats where I had my problem when I set up the systems that I built. The generic Reg ECC DDR ram I bought would not work on that board till I went out and bought some Kingston Ram that ran Great on it

Thanks for that info 🙂

I'm actually looking tentatively at this XP 2100+ CPU right now. Does connecting the L5 bridge work on those too? Meanwhile, I'll look at prices of 1.2MP chips to see how much it'll be to play it safe 🙂

About the RAM, I got 1G ECC Reg RAM with it (Crucial) which is known to work with it AFAIK (the seller said so)

In any case I really appreciate the responses to my query 🙂 I'll look at the XP modding FAQ and follow up with more questions if I have any 🙂

Thanks

Not sure about the XP 2100+, needs a multiplier of 13 to do 1733 MHz. Tyan website only show support up to 1900+ (1600 Mhz). Latest bios upgrade still does not support beyond 1900+. MB is limited to multiplier of 12X. Also the L5 bridges should be connected to do SMP.

I'm not in a hurry to complete this system. Just waiting for the prices to really go down, or when the thoroughbred becomes available (June 10?). I'd like to spend at the most $150 for each processor (OEM). Same thing with the 256 mB PC2100 Crucial Registered ECC DDR, should have bought more late September 2001 when they sold of about $40 each shipped (currently $ 102). :disgust:

Skorpio is correct, the Tiger only officially supports 1900+ or slower processors. Primarily because it was never certified by AMD as a dual processor platform, due to the fact that it does not use the proprietary 460 watt PSU recommended by AMD for dual processor operation. You may be able to overclock the FSB to get higher speeds but that is all at this time. AFAIK.

The Tyan Thunder however supports all avaliable MP processors.

Also it would be wise to consider something other than Crucial. It was pulled from the recommended list at both AMD and Crucial for that platform.. too many modules burning up. Samsung is the preferred chip.

Hi once again,

OK folks, I just bought myself the rest of the parts to build the dualie system. Got me 2x 1800XP processors. The one thing I forgot to get was conductive paint. Anyone know where I can get that from? Can't seem to find it anywhere despite the fact that a lot of websites are referring to its usage.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

mechBgon,

Thanks for the info! Found me the silver epoxy. Meanwhile, anyone else have a suggestion for a good good cooling solution for the athlons?

Thanks in advance folks 🙂

OK folks

Quick question regarding this setup. I finally got my system made and have been trying to install WinXP on it. Here's what I encounter.

Firstly, without any mods, the XP1800+ is recognized as an MP1800. I figured this version might not need a mod ( 😕 ). Anyway, while installing Windows, it dies while reading a file early on in the text-mode installation screen.

Edit: The exact error is:

File setupdd.sys could not be loaded.
The error code is 4
Setup cannot continue.
Press any key to exit
/Edit

I decided to try installing Slackware Linux instead. That died with a kernel panic too. Any ideas? Does this mean the CPUs _do_ need to be modded or does this indicate other troubles?

Any help will be appreciated

OK Folks

Searched on google for that error and came up with possible RAM issues. I'd had RAM issues earlier when 1G of RAM didnt register as anything more than 256M. Probably one faulty stick IMO since upto 768 registers fine.

In any case, in this particular scenario, I'd fiddled with the RAM somewhat and 768M registered as 256 only :-/ No idea why exactly. In any case, I took it all out and reseated 768M and it registers fine now.

WinXP just finished installing and setting up Start Menu etc and is rebooting. I think the RAM must've been it.

I was able to put together a system for a friend using the Tyan 2466M motherboard and 2 XP2100+ processors. I connected the L5 bridge and the Tyan system sees 2 MP2100+ processors. Winxp Pro sees them as MP2100+ processors also. My friend said that he has not had any problems at all and is really happy with his machine. He got a great deal on the XP2100+ processors. He almost bought the MP2000+ processors, but took a chance with the XP2100+ processors.

Thanks for the reply. Here's the interesting thing about my setup. I havent touched the processors (i.e. these are un-modded) and they're recognized fine and work as a dual setup even under WinXP.

What is going on? 🙂

The older XP processors had SMP enabled. The newer XP2000+ and XP2100+ had the L5 bridge disconnected and this is why it had to be connected to enable SMP. You have XP1800+ cpu's which are the older ones that have the L5 bridge connected. AMD started disconnecting the L5 bridge on the newer ones because they were losing profits when users found out the hack. It's great that you did not have to do anything with your cpu's. Glad that you are able to get a dual processor system to work. Enjoy!!!!!

javeed,

Where did you get the XP1800+ processors? That would be great if I can get them w/ the L5 bridges connected. Really haven't looked at the XP1800+ I have. Looks like the prices of the XP are going down.
