tyan tiger mp (s2460): what are acceptable cpu's for this board?

this is a first run of the board, bought it the month that it was released.

currently i'm running 2x 1.4 tbirds w/ 768meg ddr2100 registered crucial ram. i'm planning on upgrading this summer with a pair of dell lcds, a 4th sick of ram (totaling 1024) and some new cpu's. origionally i had though that i would be able to put a pair of MP2400+'s in there but since then i've been told that it would 'fry' my board.

anyone know what i can put in here for cpu's and still be ok with?

My system (Titan3) is based of an s2460. 2cpu.com has a good set of articles and forums to boot to help you. The manual, states (granted it is old) that you cannot have faster than 1.6 ghz and i believe this is a physical board limitation, I may be wrong. I do know that you can run tbred XP cpus, but you have to mod them by reconnecting the L5 bridges, just like with some palominos. I lucked out with my palominos because they were old OEM chips and the bridges were not cut, letting me use XP chips as MPs, because they are the same chip.

My personal system at work is sporting a Tyan S2460 mobo with dual retail Athlon XP1600 (didn't have to do any mods, chips didn't have the bridge cut), 512mb Corsair PC2100 ECC Reg, Evga TI4200 powered by a Antec 400watt PS.

To the best of my memory, the 1900+ is supposed to be the max that u can put in this mobo. Heard some people have installed faster processers but I wouldn't.

Yea, check out the forums at 2cpu.com and the Tyan forum at amdmb.com. A bunch of people ended up with burned boards when trying to go over 1900+ processors. The board is simply trying to suck too much juice through the ATX connector.

I'm happy with my 1800+'s - would like to bump the speed up some day a bit but not at the risk of fire.

Tyan says 1900+.

There is a problem with the ATX connector burning out (even with <1900+ processors). Some people have faster processors running in their S2460s, but I wouldn't try it.

Check out this thread at 2cpu.com for more info on the ATX connector problem.
