Tyan Tiger MP and Crucial RAM

Hi folks! I've had a problem with my Tyan Tiger MP (-not- MPX) ever since I got it back from warranty replacement this summer. I purchased 4 sticks of 256MB Registered DDR SDRAM from Crucial, and it originally worked just fine to give me 1024MB of ram. The board died (ide controllers got toasted, somehow), and ever since I got the replacement, I haven't been able to use all 4 pieces of ram in this machine. At first I thought it was just that one of the ram sockets was bad, but I just heard from someone who is having the same problem, with the same ram. Here's a URL to what they said. http://videl.ics.hawaii.edu/pipermail/fedora-devel/2002-November/000034.html

Has anybody seen anything like this? I'm not sure I can purchase another GB of ram just to test out this theory. Thanks.

The best thing to do is put one slab in and run a memeory test on all of them. If one or more come up date send them off for replacement. If they come up good put them all in and run the memory test again and see if it points to another slab. If it does move that slab to another port and run again. If the port shows bad then bad board. If the same slab you just moved comes up bad then replace it.

I had the same problem about a year ago when the S2460 first came out. Notice, Crucial is not on Tyan's approved memory list for the S2460 (seen here). I eventually had to use my Crucial memory in another system, and had to purchase Corsair memory. The problems is with the "bank" rating of the memory, and I believe it has to do with the DIMM itself, not the memory chips, since the Corsair memory I replaced my Curcial memory with used the exact same Micron memory chips.

So, what to do? If your memory is still under warranty, return it for a full refund. Explain to them in no unspecific terms how their memory sucks ass. And accept nothing but a full refund. They will try to convince you to exchange it for different memory. DO NOT GIVE IN. Their memory is not supported at all by Tyan. If they were really concerned about this, they would have gotten their memory on Tyan's approved list sometime in the last year since I had to deal with them.

And then do like I do and never buy Crucial memory again.
