This exactly the people like DeSantis and the like are targeting and coddling to. These type of people don't care if they live or die. In a sane world of people, banning school mask mandates or other helpful health measures will disproportionately hurt Republicans. So why do it?

Because the inmates are running the asylum. This is not cold, calculating political savvy. It’s an attempt to stay on the right side of the crazy cultish mob they’ve incited. They define themselves as hating and opposing democrats. If democrats are for it, they’re against it even if it hurts themselves more than anyone else. It’s really that simple. They’re not going to do whatever the responsible adult/expert in the room tells them to. They’re all just trying to ride this wave to personal power and enrichment.

They thought that some residual instinct of rational self-preservation would kick in once the vaccines became widely available and dropping case and death numbers confirmed that the vaccines worked. They didn’t realize how many of their constituents were in full-on " I'm not going to do anything this government tells me to do" temper tantrum mode. And now they can’t try to lead their constituents toward any modicum of rational self-preservation because their party is having its GOP perpetual crazy competition. If you try to stand up for anything that the most toxically deranged of your supporters are opposed to, you’ll get Cheneyed. Don’t assume that Republicans are attempting to win free and fair elections in the future either - or that they’re trying to compete in the marketplace of ideas; they are not. They are trying to get power - that is it and nothing more. They’re done trying to court “other” voters; they will stick with "their kind", who will not so much put them over the top in elections, but validate their power grabs.
Well written Sir, and the GOP really has nothing to court "other" voters anyway so they use the "us vs them" theory, paint "them" as commie-loving anti-American types and hope the rotten message sticks with enough people to eek out a win. The simple fact that people came out of the woodwork in record numbers to defeat trump does leave me with a faint glimmer of hope.

DeSantis held a press conference yesterday on vaccines. As The Tampa Bay Times reported, it didn’t go well.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis stood silently Monday as employees for the City of Gainesville repeated misinformation about the Covid-19 vaccines during a news conference set up by his office. “The vaccine changes your RNA,” said Darris Friend, who said he’s about a year and a half away from retirement after 22 years with the city. Another implied that the vaccine could kill her. Ideally, the governor, in a position of authority and ostensibly aware of reality, would’ve explained to the public that vaccines do not change people’s RNA and do not put anyone’s lives in danger. DeSantis “shifted his feet in apparent discomfort” but did not correct the obvious misinformation being peddled by confused people speaking alongside him.

If the government of Ron DeSantis does not meet the definition of ‘tyranny’, I must be misunderstanding the word.

Was the Chief Florida health official there? Reporter should have asked for them.

Now he's put in an order to fine businesses 5000 bucks each time they mandate vaccines. This must be that "small government" I've heard so much about.

Not that I ever had any illusion that there'd be mandates in Florida. That would make far too much sense.

In a way, they'd be bad for me since I want to keep working from home :) As it is, if I am forced to go back to the office for more than a day or two a week I'll be job hunting. I'll miss the PTO from working there 18 years but I hate the open office plan we now have and far prefer WFH, so see ya.

Just negotiate for more pto at your new job. Most companies will give in on that.

Well forcing you to work from home obviously infringes on your freedom, so now DeathSantis will fine companies a gajillion dollars who don't make people to go into the office without masks and cough in each others faces.

The shittier the person the better chance they will get nominated to lead the GQP. It's just as simple as that. That is all we need to know.

I mean look at the last guy. They just gotta top that.

The good thing is, I can't imagine many companies supporting his re-election at this point.

Somewhat related; this is what their voters really believe (from FB). They're just pandering to their base.View attachment 48258

in a weird way, I agree.

The idea that we have people pushing back against basic health safety measures for an airborne disease is kinda crazy. Nobody should have to persuade or remind you to not kill your fellow Americans.
Something is very very wrong with this country, and I think it can be traced back to religion filling people with blind belief in place of knowledge and understanding. Looking back it totally makes sense the christian run republican party would be telling people they should not wear face masks.
It all fits perfectly.

It’s a cult that’s been in the making for at least fifty years. It’s why their messaging is so consistent and predictable. Unfortunately people don’t leave cults just because their beliefs get challenged and proven wrong. They’ve been slowly brainwashed for decades. They’ve been condition to see non believers as “others” and a threat to the cause, they’ve been led to believe that it is everyone else who are the sheep and that only their politicians and media speak the truth and not to trust the “others”. When their newest cult leader tells them right to their face not to believe what they hear and see, they accept it without question.
Sure there are those who eventually awaken and escape the cult but they are few and far between and the number of new cult members grows and replaces them in larger numbers. It’s a losing battle and I have yet to see any solutions other than coddling them.

I mean this is it. It's just tens of millions of bad corrupt people.

News at 11, large country has lots of people that do shit things that are evil. For reference see Nazis, fascists, maoists, stalinists, Khmer rouge...

I mean come on, coming up with a law to bounty hunt helping women not be handmaidens? Try to steal democracy? Blaming clean energy on your own infrastructure fuck ups? And they triple down on their fake reality?

These people are evil.

Either cut the cancer off, or arm up and prepare to fight.

Yeah, I'm sure magats love him. No way pence gets the nomination.
Agreed. The GOP Primaries will be between Abbot, DeSantis, and whomever Trump gets to run in his name. Maybe Jr. since he is old enough now. Cancun Cruz and a few others will toss his their hat in. But they won't have much of a shot, but with the GOP you never know. One of them could be caught doing something particularly horrendous and get catapulted to the top.
