TX chipset

The TX is socket 7(last Intel socket 7 chipset). You should be able to put anything in the PMMX or most K6(original) series chips into the board.
 
Socket 8 is Ppro. If it's a socket 7 TX mobo, you might be able to put in a K6-2 (or K6-x+) chip, though the L1 cache might be disabled by default (due to bios issues). There are utilities to enable the cache though.
 
You sure you can put a K6-x on that ? I had a TX based TX97E with a K6 200@233, but could never install a K6-2 266. Didnt boot, and Asus said nothing about it so I quit. I believe K6-x need a super7 chipset from Ali (Asus P5-A) or VIA (some FIC mobo). Or is ist just if using 100MHz bus ?
 
No, K6-X can work in TX motherboards. Highly out of spec, I might add (not spec'ed to run on regular S7). It requires a certain level of BIOS support, as above with the L1 cache, and other features. Most Socket 7 motherboards I know of don't go below 2.5V, so that's one problem. It's just a processor that's not fully supported - in a way, kinda like Thunderbirds in a KX133 system.
 
I got a k6-400 to run in a HX chipset. If you can get the voltage right(with an adapter), and provided the bios recognizes the k6 chip, it can work.
 
I use the Shuttle Hot 569 (TX Chipset) mobo's, and they supported the K6-2. I would have to run the mobo at 75 mhz to get it close to the speed the chip was rated for, but it was doable.

P.S. If memory served me correctly, some of the K6-2's had the 2x multiplier remapped to 6x or something along those lines.

P.S.S. For those of you with long memories, the Shuttle 569 was Anand's Editor's choice for TX Mobo's several years ago (Link) , and I believe the elusive Shuttle 603 (AMD Chipset) was the overall Editor's Choice (Socket 7 days). I actually had the 603 for about 2 mo., but then it died. 🙁
 
The later K6-2's (the ones with the CXT core - ie, the K6-III core, but without the ondie cache), all K6-III's, and K6-2+'s, and K6-III+'s have the 2x to 6x remap 🙂

My little brothers Asus TXP4 (S7 TX chipset) currently runs a K6-2 @ 375 (5x75) no probs🙂.This board does cp u voltages from 2v all the way up to 3.3v in 0.1v steps 🙂.It is also supported by the bios.The info is a little hard to find on the Asus website though.
I'm sure your old board would of run a K6-2!
 
I'll get it out of the junkbox it rests in since I believe its fried. Will do some more testing, and if it is, I may end up buying some dirt cheap S7 mobo since I have the cpu rusting somewhere else, and enough ram and vga to get it going. Would intall NT4 or win95 and make it a MP3/OGR box 🙂
 
Ah the TX chipset, kinda like a BX, it was good for its time looking back it.

I had a K6-2 once and put it in a Gigabyte TX motherboard and it completely outperformed the ALi Aladdin5 and Via MVP3 boards I was comparing it with (despite the fact that it could only do 66MHz FSB max and the others had the advantage of 100MHz).

The only thing holding them back is BIOS settings and the lack of 100MHz FSB, but the K6-x with CXT core's remap the 2x multiplier to 6x (although the BIOS can stop that working on some boards) so that isn't really a problem.
