Here is the setup:

One WRT54g (version 1.1) is in my room. It has 3 wired connections (3 desktops) and 1 wireless connection (1 laptop).

I purchased a second WRT54g (version 2.0) and plugged it in downstairs with my xbox. I ran the ethernet cable from the xbox to "port 1" on the new router. I want the new router to be a "bridge" to the 54g in my room, so I can play xbox live downstairs.

update 1/12/04

Here is my little "guide" on how to do this:

1. Download the latest Alchemy firmware from: Here
2. Patch both routers to this firmware. If you don't know how to patch them, go Here
3. And then I setup my two routers in WDS mode by using this guide: Here (you must register)

I don't think that router supports bridging natively, though I think it can be done with hacked firmware (search for linksys + bridging + beasoft or veasoft or something like that).

AACG

I don't think that is what he is looking for, as it requires a physical connection between the two routers. If he had a cable run between the two routers he could just plug the XBOX in directly.

The WRT54G does not support bridging with stock firmware. You need to load the seavsoft firmware, but you should only need to load it on the WRT54G you want to act as the client/bridge.

HOWEVER

There is a big gotcha. The current free version from seavsoft does not support the latest chipsets, the new version (to be released sometime this month) does. So you can wait or pay seavsoft $20 to get the latest and greatest.

Thanks sleepwalkerX

Normaly I don't condone warez but seversoft is f'ing with the GPL so the heck with them.

Red what's the advantage of a WDS network over a client bridge? Multipel computers on the bridge?

Thanks!

A WDS network (1) allows the WRTs to "mesh" to form one large wireless network and (2) for a certain type of WDS allow the WRT to act as a bridge in addition to the first option.

Good thread, just the info I am looking for.

One question: do *BOTH* routers need to be patched with the Alchemy firmware?
