1) In Windows 98SE, I could sent the monitor refresh rate to "Optimal". In Windows XP, there is no "Optimal" choice, furthermore, it is always defaulted to 60hz which isn't to nice on the eyes.

2) When I shut down Windows XP, it gives me the "It is now safe to turn of your computer". Windows 98SE would shut down my computer automatically. Can I do this in XP

Thanks.

If you have an Nvidia card Nvreffix is your friend. It will fix your refresh rate problems.

For the shutdown problem check out the Power Options control panel applet. Specifically the APM tab.

If there's no APM tab then Windows has determined that it should use ACPI to contol power options. The problem you describe generally means that either you have ACPI disabled in your BIOS, or if ACPI is enabled in BIOS and Windows still doesn't power down your computer when you shut down you either need to update your BIOS or there is some other driver issue that is preventing Windows from powering down.

There's some info to be found about APM/ACPI in WinXP/2000 here.

The Optimal refresh rate question:

I used a program called RivaTuner (look under the video card utilities)

it has a button for 60Hz fix (or something like that) that forces the

max supported (by your monitor) refresh rate to be selected for each

screen resolution you use.
