Two week notice and vacation

I have accepted a new position with another organization with a start date of 8/5. I have not yet notified my current manager. I am scheduled for a vacation from 7/19-7/28. So excluding the vacation that only leaves 2 weeks of actual work.

I have notified my "lead" of my departure but have asked her not to tell anyone, my actual manager has no real connection to my work as I am a consultant and can easily be replaced with another consultant. Should I give notice now or wait? As far as the work goes, My departure will not cause a huge impact on the overall outcome of the project and I am working with the lead to make the transition smooth. However I am concerned telling my manager now may terminate my employment sooner than I would want since I am so easily replaceable. What do you guys think I should do?

If you don't have fixed plans then maybe give two weeks notice now, then push the vacation back a week. I doubt they will want you to work a week, leave for two, come back for one, and then leave for good. But on the other hand, maybe they won't mind if you're important to the project. They may just ask you to leave now, too. You'll have to discuss it with them and see what the options are. I don't think I would wait until I got back from vacation and give one week's notice. You don't want to burn your bridges.

Depends on if you're getting paid vacation, and if they pay out after quitting, as more than likely, they'll have you relieved of duty when you put in your notice. EG. My company doesn't pay out remaining vacation time, it would be foolish to put in notice any time before vacation was through.

to add to this, you're not fucking over the company when you leave with no notice, you fuck over your coworkers/bosses. People switch companies. And someday, you might cross that person again - and they aren't going to forget.

Are you a true consultant or work for a consulting company.

If you will stay with the same consulting company; it will not matter.

Remember, that vacation is a benefit, not a given.

I'll also add, don't give more than two weeks notice out of courtesy. I've had a number of friends end up out of work when the new job fell through, and the old company wouldn't let them rescind their resignation. Two weeks is customary.

I am a true consultant working for a consulting company, I had told my "lead" that I am leaving, so like I said my impact to them project will be minimized. My company is rather small and does not have great benefits. I read the employee handbook and am unclear about getting my vacation time paid out or not, I have about 100~ hours accumulated. My vacation plans cannot be changed at this point. I booked the trip thinking I was not going to get an offer from new organization.

Talk to the HR people of the consulting company.

Some will generate proportional vacation time based on hours worked; others require 1000hrs or 1 yr to then have vacation time.
