Two versions of Adobe CS on one machine - how can I set the old version as default?

I've got CS 5 and 5.5 on my machine. How can I set the 5.0 versions as the ones that launch when I double click files?

I can set a single file to launch with the older version, but "Change All..." switches it back to the newer version.

After you get info on the file you want to open such as .jpg, and select open with.
Select CS5 and make sure you have the padlock locked before you select Change all...

Although I don't know why you would want CS5 instead of CS5.5

Thanks for the suggestion, but it behaves the same, even with the padlock unlocked. Click change all and it reverts to 5.5.

As for why I need CS5, we distribute files worldwide and need to meet the compatibility levels of not just our clients, but their printers.

As such, we migrate to new versions relatively slowly. That said, 5.5 doesn't really bring much to the party for us anyway. It'll be at least 6 months before we evaluate CS6 for production, even though we've already got it in-house.

Just to make sure, select cmd I for the file type you want to open in CS5. Scroll down and make sure padlock is locked. Under Open with: select Adobe Photoshop CS5. Then click on Change All....

You definitely need the padlock locked when you do it or it will go back.
If you aren't using CS5.5 just uninstall it and don't de-activate which will allow you to reinstall later.

Also make sure your user name has Read & Write permissions on the file.
If that doesn't work, then I would repair permissions under disk utility and restart.

I have done this many times, as we have users that have to use previous versions too.

I should of asked which version of OS X you are using and if you have any authentication settings going on from work. You can do a test of trying to open the file with Bridge. If you can't then you may have to look at your security settings.

It may not be the solution you want but how about putting 5 and 5.5 on separate user names/accounts?

10.7.4.

I need 5.5 to convert incoming 5.5 files down to 5, which is the house standard version. InDesign is the only application in the CS suite to be such a PITA about version incompatibility, and it's like this with every version. Super annoying.

Even with the padlock unlocked, when I click "Change All..." I get the confirmation screen, which reads correctly. I click OK and the dropdown in the Info window snaps back to 5.5. It says (default) after 5.5, which I assume is what I'm fighting.

I'll just have to be vigilant about which application launches, if I can't get it to work properly. Additional accounts would be a whole.... thing with IT.
