Ok, here is what I'm trying to do

my.php

Upstairs i have a cable modem that is connected to the netgear 624+ and one desktop pc. Downstairs I have a desktop with a wireless netgear nic (311T) and a laptop with built in wireless that can receive signal no problem from upstairs. What I'm trying to do is add a second router via LAN for the desktop and laptop downstairs to swap files between. Anyone know how to get this to work?

What I tried doing was letting the wireless stuff be all DHCP and then on desktop thats connected to Router2 and the laptop thats connected to Router 2 (only one lappy in this setup just for clarity) I used my own ip addresses, but that did not work. Anyone know a good article/tutorial on this kind of thing or have you tried it yourselves or are you just super smart and know how to do it?

Why use two? Why not just use the wireles router as your only? I have a wireless router as my only one and I can share between my workstations just fine. Nothing special needed.

I think you are confused what a router is used for. I am guessing you just want a wired connection between your computers downstairs for faster transfer speeds? If so, just connect them with a crossover wire or a simple switch. You can still use the router as a switch if that is all you have. Either turn off DHCP on it, or set the address pool as a different subnet as your Wifi upstairs.

yeah, you don't need a second router. Just use your your wireless router as your internet router, and connect all the computers into it.

so it would look like this:

Wireless Router ---------------- cable modem ------------- pron
| | |
| | ----Computer 1
| |
| ----Computer 2
|
-------Laptop

If you are wanting more speed between Computer 2 and Laptop, just use a crossover cable between the NICs, or replace your Router2 with just a plain old hub, or connect Computer 2 and Laptop in the LAN ports on Router2 and disable DHCP on Router2 (so it basically just acts like a plain old hub). Man, that is getting sloppy though isn't it.

Probably the best thing to do is get a wireless bridge, and have it connect wirelessly to Wireless Router and wired to Computer2 and Laptop. So it would look like this:

Wireless Router ---------------- cable modem ------------- pron
| |
| ----Computer 1
|
|
Wireless Bridge
| |
| -------Computer2
|
-------Laptop

OR, adding in a gigabit switch behind the bridge, for more speed (not sure of any wireless bridgess with built in gig switches):

Wireless Router ---------------- cable modem ------------- pron
| |
| ----Computer 1
|
|
Wireless Bridge
|
Gigabit Switch
| |
| -------Computer2
|
-------Laptop
