Two routers in the same LAN

Ok, so I had my DSL installed last week, and to my surprise, the Telco guy that came brought me an Arescom NetDSL 1000 unit, (Info Here) wich is a modem/router.
He told me that this unit is modified by the Telco and does not allow internet sharing. I read the manuals, and it's supposed to have a configuration console via web, at 192.168.1.1. Well, this doesn't work. I tried with Telnet, and I'm able to log in and browse thru the config options. I'm using WinPoET (Argh!) at the moment.

Next week, I'll be installing a Linksys BEFSR41 wich, by default, has an IP of 192.168.1.1, will I run intro trouble here? Should I change the Linksys router to something like 192.168.1.2?

I have never heard of this particular situation but there are several ways around it. You do not need a router just use ICS which is free with windows and works pretty good once you get it going.

Probably what they did was disable DHCP on the router that you were given.

You would have to change the Linksys router's IP if the modem/router is in fact 192.168.1.1. You can not have two devices on the network with the same IP.

What is the point of having a modem/router that does not allow internet sharing??? That sounds a little bizarre. Are you sure you understood them right?

Yes, I know it sounds strange, but the Telco has actually disable the NAT/DHCP funtions in the unit. They can be reactivated, I found a few sites with instructions (tho I void the warranty). I've already purchased the linksys unit, and I'm going to use anyway because of it's 100Mbit switch, wich is better than the 10Mb HUB I'm using right now.
