I kinda like how they look - the sound was taped off camera and will be added later (the soundtrack you hear is the temp track)...Warning, the 2nd clip has a curse in it...They're less than 20 second a piece- lighting for a bar is tougher than you think so i'm pretty happy with the look i was able to get.

when does the clothes start coming off and the 'pow-chicka-wow-wow' music start? :p

seriously, the lighting looks fine on the bar scene. actually, on the zoom in*, looks like it may be hitting the side of the actors face a lil too much, but not bad enough that its worth the time to go back and re-shoot.

haha, there's a lesbian kiss later on- i can post that but I still need to edit it...

What about the "night" scene.. I know it's a little over done but any pointers to make the day scene look more authentically like night? right now it looks a little too contrasty

i agree. but it actually isnt that bad. actually, when i first viewed it, i initally got the impression that the time frame was set somewhere around dusk. was the intended timeframe, or is it to be set for middle of the night?

The second one is at night?

Day for night can be tricky. I'd lower the brightness a good deal so that only the highlights on them can be seen clearly.

I feel sorry for the camera :(

It's not the style we're using, sir.... We have cuts in other scenes, but we'll contacy you later since you're obviously a born film maker who's creative ideas are so innovative - i mean, cuts! woaw, new concept...

also, the bar scene is a rough cut - we're cutting in a shot of the girl a bit later on.. it's not all one take..

I've managed to make better movies with a $200 camera.

Well I think it looks terrible.

Only if you agree with them, I guess.

No, your comments were just rude.... And this is not a finished product - we're far from it.. I just wanted to share some clips and get some day for night feedback in particular. i wanted the films to resemble wong kar wai's style and I think it does a good job of that.. but, yeah, your opinion is appreciated.. just try to phrase it better than "i feel sorry for the camera"

Well, I've only gotten A+'s on all 12 of my film production courses, won 3 screenwriting competitions, was asked to tutor a few people by another professor.. I'll shut up, I don't need to prove anything to a person who's probably never heard of Wong Kar Wai...

I'm in awe! Didn't you get a C in one I recall... not that it matters...

won 3 screenwriting competitions, was asked to tutor a few people by another professor

So this must make you a good film maker, right?

I'll shut up, I don't need to prove anything to a person who's probably never heard of Wong Kar Wai

Oh no! I don't know who your little hero is... so I must not have any experience in film making. I guess because you know him you also posess his talent?

Screenwriting doesn't make you a good film maker. You come on these boards asking everybody for critisism on all your shorts and screenplays... why? I'll bet the majority if not all of the people you are asking have never heard of Wong Kar Wai, what good is their opinion? I'm telling you what I think, I think you need to focus more on camera technique and basics of cinematography instead of trying to make sickeningly artsy films with little to no substance.

But, I don't need to prove anything to a person who's probably never heard of John Kubicki.

ok fck the haters in this thread, dont even dignify them with a response.

I myself do not really care for the MTV style camerawork in the bar clip, but it looks pretty good. For a second I thought you were shooting on HD, what did you use to light them?

I really like the look of the second clip, it almost looks like a chemical skip bleach in some ways. What did you use to get that effect?

I'm kind of sick of video right now but people never stop impressing me with what they can get out of an XL1. I am about to start production on my 2nd larger film and I am really excited, maybe ill post it up here when i finish it ;)

I wish you'd quit posting your films here in a new thread everytime. How about making a blog or a website. Use one thread and just bump it to update.

Hey,
Thanks man- I admit, the bar scene is over done... I'm intercutting a shot of the girl in there to tone down the MTV-ness of it...

We got the look of the first shot through lighting... Our crew spent quite a while setting up our lowell three piece kit and an extra 1000 watt halogen worklamp... I've shot in a bar before and the first time was a disaster- nothing but grain.. So i'm very proud that we got the lighting right. To make it look similar to HD I used a software deinterlacer called Magic Bullet Suite. It upconverts interlaced footage into 24fps progressive.

The look of the 2nd scene (the outdoors) was done in a few steps..I'm still trying to get it right, actually.... I shot it two stops lower than I shold have and used Canon's frame mode (for that kinetic look). I then used After Effects to bring down the brightness and, yep, used a chemical skip bleach plugin as well.. I also added a blue tint as well. The problem is that it was a sunny day and the actor's face's are way too bright- i'm still trying to fix that.

Hope this helps - feel free to ask any questions - I started these projects for people to learn, even anandtechers (and even if a majority of them seem to hate me) ;)

I'm not offended... He did OK during the auditions but, yeah, he was a little flat during the shoot.. He did have the right look though.
