Two Raptor hard drives corrupted by Windows XP Pro?

lots of problems..

Ran lifeguard.. disk rated as healthy..

yet.. windows will not install right..

and now..

one drive does not get recognized.. checked cables.. but still comes up with :0138, both are getting :0139 messages..

cdisk says can't read

and.. ran WD utilities to get the above.. neither will allow me to write zeros over them

New.. 74 GB raptors.. 7400GDs

Any ideas?

If I can learn how to fix.. would prefer to do this then to just quit and rma.

No Raid, just using in regular mode. no problems with either until I tried installing windows.. No overclocking, actually running AMD X2 4800 at 2.2 instead of 2.4 to try to be as stable as possible.. I have Corsair PC-4000 RAM which is DDR 500 and I am running it at DDR 400 with auto timings.

I did try to run memtest with one of bad hard drives but it locked up with one of now apparantly questionable hard drives connected.

Most recent Nvidia Raid and SATA drivers are installed.

I have the newer Raptor with OS installed on SATA port 1 on Asus A8N32 motherboard. On intitial install of this drive, got worried .. would not let me type.. not sure if windows is installing weird, but had wrong keyboard.. which was one I was using in cd load of linux.

Changed keyboards and all went well.. strange it defaulted to dvorak or whatever..

How did the Linux install go? BTW, MemTest doesn't use any hard drive, so if it's failing, you have other problems. What motherboard is this, and what voltage is it defaulting your processor to?

Thanks for the response.

I ran memtest from puppy linux.

puppy installs and runs great just using system memory.

I have windows installed on the third raptor.. running well.

It seems to be a Sata Port 3 or 4 issue or the Raptors are bad or ??

Motherboard is Asus A8N32

I have an OCZ GameXStream psu..

Default voltage for cpu was around 1.4, i have it underclocked at 11 instead of 12 multiplier and os and computer are working with sixth hard drive I tried, my 74 GB ADFD Raptor that I had intended to use for gaming programs..

Still learning.

Voltage test all look good per asus probe program

???

Thanks for any clues..

Lots of errors in windows until i tried using sata port 1 with the newest of the raptors.

Can the other raptors.. with 8MB cache be salvaged or is is rma time.. never have returned anything..

Yes, the drives shouldn't be bad. Plug them into port 2, and reformat them. It sounds like your motherboard may be bad. Have you updated to the newest BIOS? I would try that first, before doing anything else. If that doesn't make ports 3 & 4 work, RMA the motherboard, not the Raptors.

Do you have SATA300 / SATA2 hds? And are the ports SATA150 / SATA? Have you searched for incompatibilities? Are these new drives and a new Windows installation? Do the Raptors have a jumper installed? I got two of my WD 400gb RE2 hds, and they had jumpers installed, and they wouldn't install on my RAID card. Come to find out, they aren't supposed to have jumpers installed at all, and worked fine after the jumpers were removed.

Insert OS disk and boot using disk.

Do a recovery and when asked if u have any additional drivers hit F6..wait for it to do it's thing then it will ask you again and you will have to enter S ..then it will ask you to insert disk for drivers for your harddrive..do that and hit enter

See if that works..thats what happen to me as it wasn't seeing my hard drives and had to install drivers manually.

Or try booting in safe mode and do a Fixboot and chkdsk for errors to be corrected

Blue Rain.. did that..

in regards to test.. the Silicon Image driver and sata ports work with the raptor hard drives and show NO errors, but the nvidia SATA ports, all four of them.. show the 0139, DRQ not expected error and also will show the :0138 error at times.

Thinking this could be motherboard or nvidia driver related.. thoughts?

Try rolling back nvidia drivers or use older drivers.

Did u try a fixboot thru recovery?

Try everything first before messing with MB.

The reason it happen to me was after windows update this month i had many troubles and the one above ( My previous post )worked for me but u may have to do/try the steps in this post.

Goodluck!

PS:I have a whole new mess myself going on..arrggghhh

I think I have tried about everything.. so. I think I will ask motherboard questions to see if anyone else has had similar experience and I have a few emails into wd etc..

Thanks for your help and.. good luck with your pc.
