Two puters one set speakers?

I searched here and couldn't find a topic replated to this, sorry if this has been repeated a billion times.
I have two puters with a kvm switch and one set of speakers that I wish to hook to both. I have only seen one switch but I don't think it will work because I have a 5.1 setup.
Both computers have the Abit NF7s. Can I just go to Radio Shack and get some rca hookups and split it this way, wothout harming the m.b? I have heard that there needs to be something that prevents feedback in the m.b. Or does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks....

I have a similar setup (2 computers, 1 5.1 speaker set) What I did was hook my speakers up to my main rig and then go to Radio Shack and get a cable with a mini stereo connector at each end (I can't remember what it was called for the life of me). At any rate, I connected the Line Out on my second rig to the Line In on the main rig and that solved my problem. I am not sure about the ability of the second rig to play 5.1 audio, I mainly wanted sound for system sounds and basic listening duties. The main drawback to this is that both rigs need to be on for the second one to have audio, but that's not a real problem, as I don't turn my PCs off. HTH.

Using line out and line in is a solution, but the worst possible one. A switch should be the way. A splitting cable is not. Can't advise specifically since I don't use computer speakers.

There's no reason the line-in wouldn't work. You just wouldn't get 5.1 sound from the computer that feeds into the other computer. If you had an Audigy or Live drive, you could input the digital signal from one computer into the other. I did this for a while on my 2 computers, but I never did like having wires hanging out of the front of my case.

just split it and play music or whatever on one machine at a time. I've use it for my laptop when I'm at home. Easy and both machines don't have to be on.
