Nearly 2 percent of high school students identify as transgender, and 35 percent of these trans students have attempted suicide in the past year, according to a study released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.​

The study validates similar findings from smaller clinical and web-based studies that have found transgender students face higher rates of victimization, substance abuse and suicidal thoughts when compared to their cisgender (nontransgender) peers.​

The new CDC study uses data from its biannual Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance (YRBS) report, which asked 131,901 students in 10 states and nine different “large urban school districts” an optional question about their transgender identity.​

I’m sorry but that sounds pretty bs-y to me. 2 out of ever 100 kids in high school is transgender? It’s definitely crossed into 'fad' territory. Trans is the new goth. And let’s assume that number is 100% accurate and these aren’t just teenagers that don’t fit in looking for attention, it should be illegal for any hormones or operations to be given to anyone under 18. It was never basically zero but in the last several decades we have learned much and now these kids actually have an avenue to express the confusion they are feeling. I really don’t get why people freak out over trans people. The bigger issue we need to address is the higher rates of suicide and standing around telling them they are a fad probably won’t work very well.

In a 2006, 1.9% of children identified as transgender.

What was the percent from the 2017 YRBS study cited in the news article?
1.9% (1.6-2.1)

The concern trolls should be concerned about how these children are 5.44x the risk of feeling unsafe traveling to and from school. Or the 3.39x risk of being threatened/injured with a weapon at school.

Anecdotal: i was talking to a psychologist a couple of years ago who was telling me that she had a large increase in teen girls getting therapy because of gender identity issues. I sometimes wonder if it’s because the teen boys are playing video games and watching pr0n all the time and not paying attention to the girls in a normal way so they begin questioning their identity.

I think too much screen time and especially access to porn has a negative effect on society. Girls are growing up and have never know a world without photoshop and free porn. I think we vastly underestimate the effects of that. I agree the interaction between the sexes are less than they were when we were kids due to screens and internet. They interact online but that’s not the same. I could see where that would have any manner of psychological problems resulting including questioning one’s identity.
