Two PCs on same IP address

Me and a roommate share a wireless connection. I play poker and want to make an account in his name which I'll be playing from my computer. I have an existing account with the poker site already and have logged into it from my computer. Will a pokersite be able to tell that his account is logged in from the same PC?

 
I'm pretty sure that most poker sites frown heavily on what you're trying to do. They likely take many precautions against it, and it's not likely you'll be able to circumvent it.

I'm not trying to be rude, but it's VERY easy to detect what you're trying to do.

Session is a TCP socket based on source/destination IP address and source/destination port. This is a layer4 session.

Layer7 is the application layer where actual commands and responses are exchanged, further identifying your accounts regardless of the underlying session information. But combine the session layer and application layer means - no, can't get around it.

so after i've proved i have a room mate i could say that we share a computer or something. but i'd rather get my story straight before/if they ask.

In case there's some confusion: I will NOT be playing both accounts at the same time.

There is a bit of information sent at the application layer that identifies the account you're using. Combine this with session information and you can easily tell if somebody is cheating.

At a rudimentary level without getting too much into it, it's why you can have two amazon.com browser windows open, each with a different account, on the same machine and they are kept separate.
 
no problem, global load balancing is one of my specialties.

This is why networking pounds and pounds the OSI model into ones head. It really is that important.
 
Only playing 1 account at a time is no biggy. No one is going to say anything about that.

However, at least it's true for poker stars, you will not be able to have 2 accounts in the same cash game/tournament, that have similar IP addresses. The system just will simply not let you.

So anyways, go ahead and start another account in his name. As long as he's okay with you risking his money 😛.

 
Does your room mate know your doing this?

I know if one of my friends did that I would beat them to a pulp. Followed by destroying there computer.

Some random poker site probably won't be interested in hearing your side of the story if they think you are trying to game the system. They will just ban your account and move on. It's also possible that they just won't care that you have 2 accounts on the same ip.
 
Ditto what Nuwave said. I used to play on the same network as my roommate back in the Party Poker days and have more recently played on FTP at the same time as others. The poker houses are fine with it, but will not allow you to sit at the same tables/tournaments to prevent collusion.
