In the first pic, I feel that the foreground is too dark, like some posters have already said. There's not much definition in the tree and the foreground (limitations of the camera's dynamic range), and the lighting is a bit flat and hazy because it was taken in the middle of the day, which is the worst time to take grand scenics. The same scene taken early or late in the day probably would look a lot more dramatic.
The second pic is a lot better but still suffers from a bit of hazy and flatness in the lighting. What blurredvision did was really good and really made things pop out a bit. Post Processing can really help out such a picture, such as getting rid of the haze. A bit more of the road at the bottom with a wideangle would have given this picture a bit more strength.
Yay! Don't be too let down. There's still many photographic opportunities ahead. If at all possible, from now on try to shoot scenics late or early in the day for dramatic light. There are photography agencies that actually require their photographers to specify what time of day they took their submission pictures, and automatically throw out the ones that are taken in the middle of the day.
