two nics and xbox

My son just recieved an xbox and wants to play online. I have a home network set up with a netgear rp114 router with for ports. I am using all ports for our three pc's and a laptop. The router is a dhcp server. I plan on putting two nic cards in his pc and using a crossover to connect pc to xbox. I had it working by manually putting in ip address in xbox, but when you restart computer ip changes. I dont know what settings to put on network cards to make it work right. I tried setting manual ip on nics but then xbox says ip address is in use. I am new at messing with these settings. Can anyone help me to set up static ip for card i connect to internet with and how to set up 2nd one to connect xbox to internet.

To make things trouble free purchase a simple four port hub/swtich and hook it up to the router.

On my Netgear WGR614 router at least you can assign certain devices to always have the same ip on the router.
