Two issues after reformatting.

Hi all,
I just reformatted and reinstalled everything and all is well except for 2 things:
First, my system is hanging at shut down or rebooting. I have disabled fast shut down and installed a patch from MS that's supposed to take care of it but it's still happening. I'm running Win 98 SE and the computer is networked to my laptop.
Next, my computer doesen't see my scannner. (It's an Astra 3400). When I run the scanner test I get an error message saying that the scanner isn't plugged in, but of course it is. It is a USB scanner and is plugged into a USB card that I added a few weeks ago and it worked fine. I am thinking of removing the card, rebooting,adding the card, and rebooting again to see if perhaps the scanner is using the wrong IRQ maybe.
Before I do this I would like any advice you can offer.

if you go to your device manager under my computer -> properties, does it show that there's anything wrong with your USB controllers?

and maybe try disabling your network and try shutting down or rebooting to see if it hangs again.
 
No obvious problems in Device Manager. As for the network settings I haven't configured that yet after reformatting. Do you think that I should get the network settings right before any more trouble shooting?

Do you think I should remove all the devices listed under USB in Device Manager and reboot and let Windows find them again?
 
for your usb problem, maybe you should check your BIOS to see if you remembered to enable your USB ports? if not then try another USB port, or download and use the newest drivers for your scanner.

as for your shutting down problem, it seems to me like something with the network but i am not too sure. i will try disconnecting the network first and see how it goes. if not maybe try to do a shut down after a clean boot, or even from safe mode, to see if the same problem exists in these situations. some programs resident in your memory may be acting up.

Yep...I removed all the USB devices from Device Manager and rebooted and all is well. Wish I knew what caused the problem to begin with...oh well.
Now on to the shut down problem...
 
A shutdown issue is usually casued by a h/w conflict try physically removing the cablling for the network and anything else other then the keyboard, monitor, mouse and speakers and try to shut it down. Then you could uninstall the s/w for those devices and reinstall one at a time and test shutdown after each instalation. Also boot into safe mode and look for conflicts in your device manager. good luck
