Two inches of ice on the car

How do the northerners on ATOT remove all the ice on the windshield? Do y'all just use an ice scraper and grit it out? I don't even have an ice scraper. Maybe multiple trips inside the house pouring water?

turn on car, select defrost, turn fan all the way up

periodically chip away at ice as car warms (plastic coat hanger if no ice scraper)

Yes pouring water on the windshield will work. Make sure to use very hot water too .

That will likely result in a cracked windshield from the thermal shock,

2 inches, well, start the defroster and crab a old credit card

You can also get a deicer/scraper that plugs into the cigarette lighter and has a heating element. I've got one and it works pretty well when there's a lot of ice.

Just let it defrost for a while man...then take an old credit card (or similar) and scrape what you need to off. Shoot, I live in Alaska and this is the first year I'm using an ice-scraper... 😀

Hot water will not crack the windshield if there is at least a little layer of ice left. I believe it was spidey07 who used hot water and reported that his windshield didn't crack even when all the ice was melted with hot water.

Start the car, let the engine warm up and get the defroster going - this should start to melt it from the inside but could take a while.

If you're in a hurry, try rubbing alcohol, higher purity (91 vs 70). If you're careful about it, you can also use some coarse water softner salt or even table salt applied directy to the ice which should cause it to break up a bit and make it easier to scrape.

Hot water might work... but it might also re-freeze depending on how cold it is.

Remember, as the car heats up, a layer of water will form between the ice and the windshield. ... it's not as bad as it sounds.

The thing is, in about 10 minutes, you'll be farther along than you would imagine. It might take an huor, but your looking at what, 1/2 gallon of gas?

Oh, and turn on the rear defrsoter while you are doing this.

2" is thick ... us northerners are not used to that. YOu might just have to let it thoaw over an hour or two as scraping might be impossbile.

If you use luke warm water at about body temp it shouldnt be that bad, depends how cold it is though, i did this at around -5 centigrade, worked great although it wasnt thick ice...

Hit it REALLY hard with a blunt object, most preferably a sledge hammer or other bludgeoning like object. Eventually the ice will crack and you can just take the chunks off...along with parts of the windshield.

Lukewarm water should be fine, though I reserve that for the door and boot edges. Gotta get in the car to start it, ya know 😉

Ok I tried the defroster + picking the ice method but it took way too long.

I tried pouring water on it, and it was a little bit faster.

Then I started beating the car with the kettle and the ice just cracked everywhere. All I had to do was pick huge pieces out like scabs.

Overall I'd have to say it was a fun experience... 🙂
