I am really thinking of get in to dual cpu but its it really worth the money... I would like to use an Asus mobo but there is only one that they have that have dual cpu the Asus A7V266-D and its cost something like $150 to $200 🙁 and then I have to get two 2 CPU i have a 1.4Ghz TB right now...if i go get any other 1.4Ghz would i see an good speed up? or should i go with a new XP chip.. like the 1800+..because i know the AMD XP and MP run just about the same( Link) but the XP are less money 🙂 but the money it going to cost me i can buy a new 2200+ XP so its Dual 1.4Ghz TB Vs. Dual 1800+ XP Vs. one 2200+ XP..(i would save lots of money just by geting the 2200+) what i am paying to do with its computer is play Dvds and Divx on my TV and encode dvds to divx and be a file sever for my home(only 5 other computers) also have the computer be a small web sever and streaming MP3s to the web with cable internet....Can i do all its on just one 2200+ or should i go Dual CPUs?

Sorry is so long but thanks for helping out

I personally don't think the dual cpu thing is worth the money unless you're doing something/ using something that is specifically designed to take advantage of the dual cpu's. My three cents. 🙂

Well you see everthing i want to do with the computer...i want it to be able to sever and encode or play movies at the same time with out geting slow...can a XP 2200+ do all that?...

I would either:
1 - Sell your 1.4 and mobo and get the dual mobo with 2 XP1600+'s.
2 - Keep your current system as the server & utility machine (e.g. divx encoding, other non-interactive tasks) and build a new system as the interactive machine (gaming, dvd playing, etc.) where highest-speed performance is desired. Buy a KVM switch so your room doesn't look like a computer repair shop.

jaybee

PS I don't think you'll be happy with a single processor doing all those tasks (web server, file server, divx encoder, dvd player, game player, web browser, et al). So IMHO the one cpu solution is out.

I believe a dually would do what you want. FWIW, most of us who have dually experience would rather have a pair of slower CPUs than a single fast one.

For those reading this thread that believe the myth that SMP is only worth while when your software is coded for it, may I suggest reading this thread.

so 2X1600+ would be better the one 2200+....I'm not planning on play games or useing it for any more then divx encoding and play movies and severing out stuff... Most of the time the computer will not be in uses by anyone so it just be there severing and i do not think i am going to get more then 10 use on the sever at the sametime. I really do not fell like building a new system (I just building a new system that will be my gamming computer)

Buy a KVM switch so your room doesn't look like a computer repair shop.

Too late 🙂

MrThompson- what type of dual CPU do you have? and what do you use it for?

there a big diff with dual AMD and Intel right?..well i now the new dual CPU for intel are very $$$...to much for me anyways...i am look for a way that i can do all this stuff...and save money...the 2200+ is still looking really good to me(less money) are you able to run just 1 cpu on a 2 cpu Mobo?
