two hard drive questions

ok, first of all, is it better to leave the hdd spinning(Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 45, 30gig) 24/7, or put on power management to shut it down after 15 minutes not being in use? i know it's hard on the motor to start it up, but i would think it would be just as hard to leave it spinning constantly, right?

also, my maxtor is giving me a 19ms search time according to HD Tach, but 67mb/s transfer rate. 19ms sounds very wrong, does anyone know why that might be? i'm using an MSI K7T Pro2A with the overclocking BIOS 🙂 thanks 🙂

Your first question I might be able to help you with. First off tho I need to know something. How long do you leave your computer sitting there ideling? If you are away from it..... say more then 12 hours at a time and don't walk away from it all the time.... I would just have it shut down after an hour. That way if you walk away from it for alittle bit you don't have to wait for it to start up again. And also you don't have it spin up, shut down, spin up, shut down all the time. That could be real hard on the HD.

well i leave it on 24/7, so it's idle for the whole night, and on weekdays, the time i'm at school(about 16 hours a day or so)

Once my friend's computer was on for about a week, and I checked system info and the system resorces were down to 19%!!! This could be the reason HD tach is giving you that 19ms seek time.Try a reboot and see if it helps your seek time.
