Two green flashes in the sky in Chicago area?

I was driving on I-88/I-290 w/ my girlfriend around 5:45PM CST.. she said "Did you see that?" and described a green flash. I didn't see it. but then a 2nd one occurred.. in the sky, a big green flash, kinda hazy looking (maybe it was hazy in the sky, dunno.. it was kind of dark). Anyone else see this, or know what it was?? Kinda scary, given the state of alert we're in.

I don't know if it's what you saw, but sometimes along the horizon at sunset there is a flash of green because the sunlight in the green part of the spectrum gets bent the furthest by the atmosphere. Sometimes the green part is still visible after the sun has set, and you see a flash of green. If you search for "green flash" on Google you'll probably find something.

Dunno if it was a sunset green flash. It was already fairly dark out. ANd it was a HUGE flash in the sky, not a small one. I guess if it's of any significance, it'll be in the news tomorrow.

Could have been an aurora too maybe.

*Shrugs*

anyone remember the movie "Maximum Overdrive" (AC/DC - Who made who)

green flashes in the sky caused by a comet...then pop machines started shooting cans at people and truck drove themselves...I bet that's what's happening

Hehe. That's one of my favorite movies of all time. My favorite part is when the soda machine starts attacking the little league baseball team.

another thing to consider.. if it was a sunset green flash, why were there two of them?

Not only that but green flashes are very rare...you usually have to be somewhere with water on the horizon (like a beach) to even have a remote chance of seeing one.

We had one of those here in MD yesterday. Well after sunset, heavy snow and wind at the time. A deafening boom occurred at the same time. It was not a transformer blowing up as others suggested. Further investigation revealed that a large evergreen weighted down with snow toppled across some 34.5 kV feeders. This was about a mile away and the reflection from the snow lit the sky up like an aurora!

Cheers!
