768MB and 1024 MB

Nvidia won’t
launch just one, it will launch two cards based on the GF104 chip. The fastest one will end up with Geforce GTX 460 name and it comes with 1024MB of memory on a 256 bit bus.

The second card is called Geforce GTX 460 768MB and as you can tell, it has 768MB of 192bit memory. There might be some clock difference between these two but this is something we cannot confirm at press time.

The launch date is July 12th at least according to some people that should know this and the samples should go out to the press very shortly. The chip should be a good overclocker and priced less than GTX 465. The chip is also internally known as the one that might get Nvidia back to the winning ways as it's the best chip they made in years, people who are in the know claim.

I'll believe it when I see it. If all the positive rumors are true then the 1gb, 256 bit 336 shader part should go toe to toe with the 5850 once clocked around 700 mhz. This would be absolutely fantastic and would finaly break ATI's stranglehold on upper mainstream parts and, with enough availability, help end etail price gouging.

If, OTOH, we get more of the same old same old -- memory running at 70% of rated speed, massive current leakage causing thermal runaway problems trying to hit higher clocks and so on -- it'll be a part competing with the 5770. For a predicted MSRP of $200-250 I'd take a pass on a hotter, more power hungry 5770 with PhysX.

Not this naming nonsense again, two different cards with the same name? I thought we were past this.

Did anyone think they weren't going to launch at least two GF104 based cards?
I mean seriously, how many GPUs have launched on only one card? The HD5450 one is all I can think of recently.

Don't see the big deal on this? Hoping for 5850 performance?

Lmk when we get 480 performance with 5850 power consumption.

I don't think that is the concern. The issue is that the cards have the same name, but different specs. If it was just a difference in RAM, no biggie, but that's not the case.

Geforce GTX 460 1024MB/256 bit bus should have been GTX 460
Geforce GTX 460 768MB/192 bit bus should have been something different. Maybe a GTX 455.

Yeah it would be like.
GTX480 1.5GB/384bit
GTX480 1.2GB/320bit
GTX480 1.0GB/256bit
