Two games. Both have big maps. One loads instantly the other in 30 seconds. Code is code is code, no?

I hate level load times. That's why I saved up and purchased the fastest HDs available and set them up in the fastest configuration possible; two 15K rpm SCSI drives, RAID0.

You have a game like IGI-2 (granted, half of you half never heard of it) but the maps are huge. The game loads up in 10 seconds flat and levels load even faster than that!

Splinter Cell? Game loads in about 15 seconds, levels load in the same 10 seconds.

Then you get games like Doom3 and HL2. 30 seconds or more for the game to load, 45 seconds or more for a level to load! :| What kind of BS is this?

I have a GB of memory, so that ain't it.

What kind of weak ass coding are they doing these days?

And NO, I can't code. I pay my $50 for the game to pay those coders, thank you. Write better code you fckaking lamers!

That is all.

I would say it was due to dynamic ingame loading of maps...but I think my single ATA/100 8mb drive is beating those load times you've quoted for both doom3 and halflife 2. At the very least, its about the same.

More ram 😛

Yeah it is pretty crazy how some games are like that. Some very fast and some take longer. But 45secnds? They seemed fast enough on my friends system that was just an SATA Seagate drive.

graphically speaking doom3 and HL2 are much more complex than splinter cell, so maybe that has something to do with it

Detail in the levels. Massive increases in objects, polygons, textures, shadows / dynamic lighting information.

id has John Carmack who is the best 3D engine designer and coder in the world, it's just that the amount of eye candy has increased so much over last-generation games that it can still bog down the best hardware available today.

That's partly by design: like Quake 3, Doom 3 is partly a tech demo to stress and show off the new engine, and to give the engine a long working life (for use in other games) it's built right at the edge of what is playable today.

"Why don't they make the levels simpler?"

Because the game-buying public demands that new games look better than old games, and they will throw money at the games that look the best.

Make sure you have things like "pre-load player skins" off.

I have no idea where to find that....isn't that something I'd want though? I don't want the characters to have no skin! Maybe no clothes...but skin is a necessity.

DaveSimmons: I know...today's games are way more complex. IGI-2 isn't exactly 3D like HL2, but the levels ARE big. 🙂 It just boggles my mind at how long it takes to load. 🙁

I don't know where'd you find it on those games, I just know that it cut my map loading in Unreal down by a good 20 seconds. The skins are still loaded in the game, but they are loaded in real-time instead of loading every possible skin before start-up.

should have bought raptors instead. better gaming performance.

I thought raptors in raid0 wasn't recommended as all that

Raptors are good for game loading. Raptors in raid0 are pretty much just good at wasting money.
