Two customers had Win10 foisted on them yesterday through WU

That makes no sense. Yes, they upgraded (not realizing they approved it, understandable) and their data is most likely still there. They just need to revert back to 7.

One scenario I can think of would be RAID0, an iffy driver could potentially make a fatal mess AFAIK.

Another scenario would involve failing storage hardware, and the upgrade pushed the file system over the edge.

Does the Win10 upgrade do anything interesting in terms of altering the partition layout? If so, a botched partition alteration would result in a headache for someone who knows how to recover data, or would be "fatal" to someone who doesn't know what can potentially be done in that scenario.

Also heard the updated is now recommend and to avoid it you need to uncheck the tick-box in Windows Update setting that says something along the line of "treat recommended updates like critical updates". Therefore only critical updates are installed else all recommended are installed which includes win10 upgrade.

Had several customers experience this as well as a good friend who should have been savvy enough to know better. Caused some serious problems.

Since then I've installed GWX control panel on all my customers machines and the problem has not come up again.

GWX control panel is useful and should be installed on any 7 machine that needs to stay put. I am using it on my Windows Media Center box that drives my 4+1 TV tuners, records my shows and feeds my two xboxes with live TV as extenders.

Also works well on Windows 8/8.1

I have heard at least one opposite story, a friend of mine upgraded win 8.1 to win 10, about two months of regular use later he turned on the PC only to find Win 8 was back. I suspect some sort of crash error with an automatic rollback to a win 8 restore point but definitely the weirdest story I've heard. He had to run the win 10 update a second time.

It is interesting for sure. The only thing I can say for sure is that WU on every version prior to 10 runs like crap if it isn't already up to date.

As for the Windows 10 update, I have un-hid and installed every Windows Update for 7 and am still on 7, by doing absolutely NOTHING out of the ordinary. The update icon is there, it's on the top page of Windows Update, and the Install Updates Icon is on the shut down button (which I have pressed a few times since), but so far nothing has changed.

So I still stand by the notion that people are hitting things without paying attention to what they are doing. About the only thing left to occur since I made the change is a Patch Tuesday. I will let one of those go by before I:
1) pull off the update showing the icon, or
2) go ahead and more up to 10.

I really haven't decided yet. I am typing this in a Windows 10 VM right now, so I am not concerned about being comfortable with it or bad people capturing all my data, it's just that I still find 7 easier to get to stuff and easier on the eyes. But I'll be going to 10 at some point, so it almost seems silly to keep pushing it away.

Win10's not horrible, but I still prefer Win7. unfortunately, newer low-end PC devices come with eMMC, which isn't supported by Win7. (Though it could easily be, if MS back-ported the eMMC driver built-in to 8, 8.1, 10. MS did release an NVMe driver for 7 too, which is all the more confusing why no eMMC driver.)

I'm getting used to Win10. I'm using it right now on my IdeaPad 100s.

Heres a good video about this....

Might be too NWS for here but I figured I would advise people in case the staff doesnt want that here they can delete my reply...... (Its not good to post a vid like this w/o warning people of its strong content.. (In case they are @ work or something))

Agree with this. I'm just hoping there are enough improvements in security and such-like 'under the hood' to make up for how dull and ugly it looks compared to 7.

Aesthetically, to me, it just seems inferior in every way. To my mind the loss of 'decorative' features like borders and transparency actually makes it less clear when using it on a large monitor.

There's too much white space and the edges of screen entities are less immediately obvious. For lots of things that you need to click on you can't easily see where they begin and end, you have to just make a rough guess as to where the clickable area is.

Its like an over-exposed photograph.

Delete the post? I wish somebody would delete your account. You are clueless and use too many bangs.

Im not clueless @ all,Im aware and trying to help 🙂

If you were trying to help, you'd be posting facts and not conjecture, and arguing from a position of logic instead of emotion.

Instead, you're like an over-excited child who keeps spilling the baking ingredients while yelling "IM HELPING!".

Well Im sorry if i appear like that
