Two Computers, Two Monitors

I haven't been able to find a solution to this anywhere, I'll see if any of you can find one.

Scenario:

I have my laptop that I use as my main computer. I have another computer (tower, and LCD monitor), that are both hooked up normally, by themselves.

What I want is to have the LCD monitor to show my laptop's screen as its secondary monitor, and have it be able to switch back to show its computer's actual screen. This is so I can record on that computer, what is on my laptop screen, so that my laptop isn't being totally bogged down.

I cannot get either of the computers to read the other's monitor through the cable I am using, I'm not sure if it is the right cable (it very well could be) or if there are some other settings that I must...set. I have tried many things already, but there is nothing I can find anywhere that has this kind of scenario.

If you need some other information I can post it.

You can't do that with just the monitor hooked up like so. If you are trying to record video of what you see on the laptop then you'd be better off using Windows Remote Desktop and/or VNC and some capture program on the desktop and connect to the laptop over a network.

Again, Neither computer sees what's on the other computer via the Video Cable. You should be able to output the video from the laptop to the Desktop's LCD Display but the Desktop computer will have no awareness / impact of that. In fact, you should be aware of that because neither the desktop keyboard or mouse will be doing anything when the laptop's using the screen (unless you hooked up the mouse / kb directly to the laptop, in which case they'd no longer be connected to the desktop).
