Two computers on a LAN -- Connected to the same UPS battery backup unit

I have a very ample CyberPower UPS. It should handle as much as 800W of sustained power draw.

As a purely temporary measure while building a WHS server, I connected the server to the same UPS as my Sandy Bridge workstation. The workstation is connected to the UPS for communication through their proprietary USB-to-RJ45(?) cable.

Is it possible to configure this . . . subsystem in my network -- to shut down both computers during a power outage? The "personal" version of CyberPower's software is installed to shut down the SB workstation after three minutes.

Isn't there a "business" version of their software that would allow me to make the server shut down per some sort of communication from the workstation?

Dunno about that specific UPS, but most I've seen have USB and serial (RS-232) ports, so it should be possible to connect two computers to its monitoring system.

You might be able to shut down the server if you can get shutdown -i to start automatically on power failure and have it shut down your server...

APCUSBD let's you use the usb port and share it to hundreds of machines. it works awesome. not sure if they support other brands.

it's faster and more reliable than those buggy cards for $250 they try to sell you to go on your APC unit.

Just need a physical or VM with pass-through.

With that and VMA and ghetto scripts you can power down your entire network (vm's,then vmhosts, then san, then keep that proliant microserver to run the last leg .. at 50 watts those things can run FOREVER on a small SUA2200)

What is APCUSBD? Is that the business or "enterprise" version of PowerChute? Or is it a model-line of APC UPS's? I think the CyberPower software has "business" vs "personal" versions of their software, just as I find with PowerChute.

Most of my UPS's are APC's. The CyberPower is a 1200VA unit, which I got with discount because I needed a replacement for an APC which had shown signs of battery-age. I moved the APC to my Home Theater rig -- to power only the devices with usage less than either the AV/Receiver or the TV -- those are plugged in to the "surge" side of the UPS.
