Two CD-RW/ROm on same IDE Channel

I build a new m/c. I am planning to use HP CDRW 8x4x32 and DVD-ROM on the same IDE channel, channel2. Can any one tell if I could copy from CD to CDRW or not without copying to hadr drive first.
From my past experience (Pentirum 120Mhz) my machine got locked up(I used Adaptec EZ CD Creator) when I had CD-R drive and CD-ROM on the same channel (may be because of slower machine and low buffer on CD-R-Mitsumi 2x6 2602TE). I have IDE channel1 used for Maxtor/66 HD with 80 pin connector and when try to connect either CDRW or DVD, machine won't boot because cdRW/DVD needs to be connected to 40 pin connector cable. Any suggestion?

hm... by 80pin i think you mean ata66/100 cable for the HD right? cd-roms should work with those cables too although if your setup is locking up, i have nothing else to suggest. make sure the drives are activated in bios and they are set to master and slave respectively... it IS suggested you had the source cd-rom and burner on different ide cables and it is known to reduce buffer underruns and bad burns from cd-to-cd, especially in Adaptec cd creator...

While they recommend you have your CD drives on different channels, I run my DVD and Burner on the same ide channel, and have no problems(I even use EZCD Creator). Supradude is right about the cables, if the cable is good, they are backward compatable with 40 pin connectors.

I think with a Pentium 120 that you are very likely to have buffer underruns. The faster you try to copy a CD (8x) the more likely you will have this problem. I did have a problem using a 4x burner on an AMD K6-2 500 system. Burning at 8x would have made it almost impossible.

However, on my new Athlon 850, I have an HP 10x burner as the secondary master, and a Pioneer 16x DVD drive as secondary slave. No problems copying CDs at 10x. Make sure that you have DMA enabled for both the drives though.

Thanks SuperDude and rbV5. While I tried to the unconnected ent of ATA66/100 cable to either DVD or CDRW on channel1, neither HD nor CDRW/DVD is recognized even if I set jumper properly. I might give it one more try on checking on the jumper. Here is the plan:
On channel1 I will make HD as master(already is) and DVD as slave and see what happen.
Will post if I run into any problem.

NateSLC, I will check my control panel to make sure DMA is enable, I thought WinMe takes care of it by default, correct me if I am wrong. Thanks for suggestion.

Nope. I was wondering why my hard drive was so slow after installing Win ME. It was the DMA setting. Of course the DMA setting won't help windows recognize the drive on the master channel... 🙂 Good luck!
