*TWO APEXs DOA!*

Hah, I'm on my second Apex. The first one had a problem with component video - the middle output was dead. I just bought another and now I have no component with it. Optical and svideo is fine, but I want component, regardless of the actual gains from it. I was using my Xbox's component to confirm my tv is not the problem. Pieces of crap! I will have to pick up another dvd player now *shrug* Honestly I'd try a 3rd for sh*ts and gigs, but I got the last one in the store, since they sold around 20 this weekend. What a huge piece of garbage!

---

I guess maybe I need a standalone dvd player now. I have a 5.1 capable receiver, which is unlikely to be upgraded in the near future. I have a pathetic TV, but there is a chance I will get a bigscreen sometime in my life, so that is a consideration as well.

What's the hot shizzy right now?

*UPDATE*

Well that was fast. I was at sears bringing something back and they had the apex. I realize it's a low-end unit, but upon further consideration I realize I won't be buying a bigscreen until at least next year. $34.88 for a dvd player is just stupid cheap, so that's what I bought. Thanks for the help!

DVDRHelp has a lot of review on different DVD players. I have two; Samsung & Apex and I must say my $30 Apex is as good as my $100 Samsung.

BTW, Sears is having a clearance on the same Apex model I have for 34.88 this Saturday.

For $100 it really doesn't matter which one you choose.

Consider the $150 Pioneer 563 (not sure if that's the model number) in the BB ad this week. Nice player to get you introduced to SACD and DVD-A as well.

I'm selling my xbox since it's not 100%, and mrsskoorb said I can't buy a new one, but I can buy a better video card, so I'm tired of arguing with her :)

$35 for a dvd player? Damn.

Does it have the basic features needed like component vid, optical, and whatever the heck the feature is that the xbox doesn't have about extra lines or something...?

On your tv it doesn't matter if it has progressive.

agreed....if you do get a big screen later on, the $50 or $60 for a new DVD player wont matter much. The cheap DVD players also tend to play different formats better than more expensive ones.

You can get a Toshiba SD-3950 for pretty cheap these days. To be honest, if I were going to buy a new DVD player, I'd get a changer, but that's just me.

I don't watch enough movies for a changer!

So that apex doesn't have progressive - what wouild the cheapest player with progressive be? I will buy a bigscreen anywhere from 2 months to 4 years from now.

If you want a decent dvd player you are going to have to spend more than $100. Any player will do if you are not going to be doing that. Just because it says progressive scan doesn't mean jack..

i'd pickup a cheap toshiba .. i've seen them for like $119 Canadian, and they are really nice looking IMO too... my friend has one hooked up to his otherwise expensive home theater and it plays excellent for it's price.

If you might not be getting that tv set in the next 2 years, hold off on the dvd player. There will be the HD-DVD players out by that time...

Definitely now the apex would cut it. That toshiba for $48 after peebates would be pretty good though...

the apex will play avi files and play +/- discs. Toshiba is known to be very picky. Apex's are also knows to be very easy to hack if you want to play dvd's from different regions :)

I upsell people off the apex everyday, but their dvd players do a heck of a lot for the money.

No way, the Toshiba SD4900 will play everything you throw at it, including MP3s and WMAs on DVD+R.
